  • Anyone edited native DVCPRO HD footage, please help!

I’m about to start editing a programme that has been shot on a Varicam at various frame rates. The initial workflow idea was to dub the tapes to DVCAM for doing an offline, and then online elsewhere. However, as we have 2 FCPHD stations (Cinewave & Kona 2) we should be more than equipped to do the whole edit in house, by capturing using the native DVCPRO HD codec via FW, we would avoid the need for masses of RAID storage.

My questions are these: how much space does this format take up i.e. I’ve heard that 720 60p takes up 1 GB per minute, but it depends on the frame rate. We may have to downconvert initially, depending on how many hours of footage we can squeeze onto a drive. Also will I need the external frame rate converter or could I use the plug-in? I’ve heard the plug-in only works with FCP in NTSC (I am in the UK). Does this mean that if we captured at full online then the plug-in would work as we wouldn’t be using a Pal timeline?

Any top tips would be greatly appreciated.

[Otis F] “I’ve heard that 720 60p takes up 1 GB per minute, but it depends on the frame rate.”

DVCPro HD is around 5 – 15 mb/sec depending on the frame rate. The smaller the frame rate, the smaller the file size. I’ve cut an entire 22 minute episode of a show here which required the entire timeline to be rendered because every clip was color corrected and then throw in all the animations that needed to be created I’m easily over 1 hour of footage. According to my array, it’s less than 2GB for the entire show and that’s 720p/60 (59.94)

Yes you do need that frame rate converter which you will see appear under the Tools menu to extract the various frame rates. Just download it from the Apple site. No idea on the NTSC / PAL thing though.

Here, go to the Panasonic site to get the Frame Rate Converter.

    https://catalog2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ModelDetail?displayTab=O&storeId=11201&catalogId=13051&itemId=70438&catGroupId=14595&modelNo=AJ-HD1200A&surfModel=AJ-HD1200A

That’s a link to the 1200A deck and then click on the Support and Resources tab. You’ll see two things to get. DVCPro HD Components for Final Cut Pro, which will actually take you to the Apple Site.

And the Frame Rate Converter tool, which you’ll download directly from Panasonic.

    If this link doesn’t work, go to panasonic.com > business & professional > professional video > video recorders > dvcpro > AJ-HD1200A

Are you kidding?? Do you really need to render colour corrections in DVCPro HD??

Yep. You’ll get some realtime with basic settings, but if you really push the CC into some heavy tweaking, it will be render time. I always render everything before output anyway.

    Walter:

How long did that 22 minute time line take to render and on what machine?

Approx. 4 hours on a Dual 2.0 with 3GB RAM. It was some pretty heavy duty color correction and there were a lot of titles along with several Chroma Key / Matte / Composite shots. Probably about 2 hours without all the extra stuff.
