The way I understand it, most of Resolve’s custom driver has to do with deck control. But I imagine realistically updating doesn’t hurt except for fringe cases.

Yes, that’s my understanding. The full file is always read, no matter what.

Resolve always pulls at original resolution, so you don’t have to worry about quality loss in the situation you’re describing. If you have a 1080p timeline, it will read the 4k, resize it down to 1080 using the scaling algorithm you selected, then feed it to the color processing and output pipelines.

I’m curious, what is meant by animation curves? Is it the ability to keyframe a curve to move?

I think it’s actually stated somewhere that the software preview window of FCP 7 shows video with a different gamma.
Render out the file from FCP and compare the two in quicktime side by side, or preview from FCP on a broadcast monitor. Still gamma shift?

If you’re willing to put in some manual labor, create a new empty session, and use the split clips produced by scene detector to rough assemble the cuts the way you want them.
You can switch timelines fairly easily without affecting your grades.
