Did anyone get a chance to see RED performance? Is that going to be real time and does it support all the bleeding edge work that the RED guys are doing on their debayering?

This is also news to me, in regards to GTX285 vs the Quadro. From the tests and benchmarks and specs I’ve seen, as far as CUDA performance, the GTX is actually a stronger card. I have a hard time justifying the expense of a Quadro based on that.

As far as being end of life, that phrase can be applied to any computer component the moment it hits retail. I think the best possible thing that Apple can do for us with the next Mac Pro release is to add sufficient PCIe and power to enable us to stack 2+ GTX285s or what have you.

On the other hand, I’ve always found the apple tax on mac GPUs a bit of a travesty. The cards are overpriced compared to their PC counterparts and underperform compared to running the same card in windows bootcamp.

  • Very good point, I hadn’t thought of that. I have built a number of PC systems, but when it comes to Mac towers, I tend to don’t think to improvise like that!

Also, and I suppose this is a better question for a blackmagic forum, but what are the differences between DeckLink Extreme 3 and 3D? If 3D on Mac isn’t supported, it seems getting a 3D output card is a fruitless endeavor.

  • That makes sense. I would guess that porting a Linux build to mac is a slightly easier task than windows, and, I would also assume that mac’s inflexibility creates further incentive to eventually purchase a linux license.

Also, I do not believe the 8800 is a viable replacement for the GT120 (correct me if I’m wrong). The GTX285 requires 2 power cables, the 8800 requires 1, and the GT120 requires none. Since current mac models only have 2 power connections for the videocard on the motherboard, it would be impossible to run an 8800 and a GTX285 at the same itme.

  • What I’m curious about is whether a Blackmagic Decklink Studio will suffice. Obviously one won’t be able to do 3D with it, but otherwise I thought the two cards were similar enough. Has there been any specific talk on the subject?
