“DON’T RENDER TIME-REVERSED LAYERS, OR YOU WILL BE IN BIG TROUBLE.”I have never heard of any problem like this before, May be a its a bug. Do have the latest update installed?
After Effects CS6 (11.0.2)Also if the RAM preview is fine then you can save the RAM preview:
Go to Composition> Save RAM Preview and see if it works.Try using Set Matte Effect instead of Track Mattes and check whether the same problem occurs or not.

Don’t think it is available for AE 6.0 . Here is the download link :

Post this question to Adobe’s Forum to know whether it is possible to upgrade AE 6.0 to 7.0 version.

Especially since I could have to do some rain drop actually in the moment it’s hitting something
You can use Trapcode Particular with to create Rain drops. Particular also has a great feature of producing Auxiliary Particles with which you can emit particles on hitting a wall or floor.
Check this tutorial on creating Rain with Trapcode Particular and Trapcode Form:

Go to Physics>Air>Visualize Fields and disable it. I think you have accidentally enabled it.

Can;t say much about the plugin you are using but you can try CC Kaleida (Effects>Stylize>CC Kaleida) which comes with AE. This won’t give you have any edges.

As Joseph said you can create the effects in AE with some stock footage of lights and then blending them in a very subtle way with your footage. Though its better if you learn how to achieve this through camera. I don’t think it would be too difficult to do so. You have to learn about Depth of field a little and you can get these effects after experimenting for some time.
