You’re probably right. In projects originated at our studio I make sure all mp3s are converted to 48k aif or wav. My music and SFX library is 48k, though we get the occasional 44.1k file. Seems like the more odd files on a timeline the worse the OMF comes out.

I have made OMFs in FCP and transferred them into DP on weekly basis for the last seven years and have never had any major problems. I have had a couple of instances where a file or two gets mangled. Usually its a file that is not tied to a video track in FCP. I’ve also had problems with mp3 music files on the FCP timeline, I never do that but I get projects form others in that format. My fades from FCP are never a problem. Sorry I can’t be more help, but I just don’t really have any major problems.

Got the wrenches today and they’ll work fine. Not overly pretty but for the price they do the job just fine. Secured with a rubber band and zooms are smoother and easier.

That’s exactly what I was looking for and the price is perfect. Funny, when I first was thinking of what I could use on the zoom, my mental picture was of an oil filter wrench that I used to have, this is it! HA HA.

The Panasonic looks interesting, but it doesn’t seem to be available. In the meantime I found that Red Rock has a lever for their line of follow focus rings, but for 35.00 for a lever I actually might look into making my own. I had originally thought to adapt a follow focus ring so looks like I’m on the right track.

Bryson, thanks for the input. I agree that the server option would be best for “headquarters”, as that would be the place to collect all the archives into one catalog, and its the option I’m pressing for them to do.
As far as putting the catalog out of sync, what we are dealing with are archived drives. Once a finished show is archived those drives are never written to again. This project is a way for the EP and Marketing dept to know what’s on a drive in order to search for a clip from a particular event and then have the production house that has the archive pull the shot from the archive.
Our facility houses about 80% of the archives so while it would be nice for us to have this in a server catalog its not really a big deal as we look for shots based on a particular event in a particular year, so we’d go right to a specific catalog to start searching.

Wow, spent some time with this weekend with the pro version of the program. Its doing everything we wanted from the system. Very intuitive, which is helpful because as well laid out as the manual is, its sometimes short on information, like, “to do this, click this” with no indication where the menu item is. But that’s small because like I said what looked like a daunting task Friday, is now humming along smoothly.
While I think the server version would be great, for now I know that to get the client agreeing to use cat dv, we’ll probably have to make the pro version work. Which for our purposes it is. Its nice to know that if we start with the pro version we can move up to the server version later.
NOW FOR THE QUESTION- After I catalog my backup drive and make proxies, I then copy the folder that has the catalog and proxies to a remote machine. When I open the catalog on the new machine everything is offline until I point the path search to the proxy folder. Initially the media still shows offline until I click on a clip then it changes to online.
I am looking for a way to make the clips change to online all at once. If I click on the preview node they alll show as online but its a filtered setting and some clips that may still be offline disappear. I could also scroll to each clip to make it go online but that takes forever. Is there an easy way?
For now that’s it, I’m going to torture the program some more, but no complaints at all.

    Thanks,

We do that all the time, I have an older G5 with an AJA LH card and a MacPro quad with and LHi and run an SDI cable between them. The Card does a great job of uprezing.

  • This looks like the same guy who gave a presentation at the Macworld Supermeet, he was hilarious there too. If it wasn’t him, then there’s two extremely twisted guys running around being insanely creative.

August 14, 2009 at 5:40 am in reply to: Trumpet sound in background… help!

I do audio post on a reality type show and you never know what’s going to show up in the background. I’ve had several instances where there is music in the background, so what I do is add some music from our library and i can usually mask the offending music. The ear is easy to fool. If you start the music a little higher in volume and then slowly ease it down, the listener will only really hear that in the background. It the way our brain deals with the cacophony that’s going on around us.
If your going to edit this interview you’re definitely going to have to do something as the background music will jump all over the place.
