Does this shift happen in clips containing alpha channels ?
Most of the shifts I’ve experienced (in preview, as well as through firewire) did not transfer to the exported files…

I would work in your monitor’s native resolution. When working from home, I use a 1440×900 and even do work in true 1980i HD. The only draw back is that there are small details you may miss, especially if you work with keyed footage.

Are you familiar with compression ?
Use the audio Dynamics plugin.
You could do a quick and dirty job using only the limiter setting (will keep your audio from peaking), but it works best in combination with the compressor setting. The limiter will be much rougher on audio variation when used alone.

You’ll probably have to look at the Serious Magic website for a software solution (Coming to Adobe soon).
I have heard people mentioning codecs to make this work in Premiere in a couple of discussions, but SDI through AJA has been the only to make it work for me. I would do a search in the forums archives if you don’t have an SDI input. Many sugested different workarounds.

It would be much faster to record a dirty white image to a VHS, fast forward it, and shoot it or capture it, than trying to recreate it in AE…

We ended up having to use an Image Pro which retails at about $6000, so that looks pretty good 😉

Nahh, I’ve exported 400 GB videos in the past. It could also be a few other things. Does it always stop at the same place? Are you using firewire or USB2 to connect that drive ?
If using firewire, make sure that the drive is the only thing plugged in.
What do you mean by jittery? It is jumpy? Also, what format are you exporting to ?
Jittery could just mean that your computer isn’t keeping up with the vidio. Finally, is this just happening on this particular project ?

There are quite a few free video hosting sites out there, and most will offer the ability to host private videos as well.
A few come to mind…

BTW, most external disks do ship as FAT32, for compatibility between different OSs. So it is likely the issue.

Assuming that you are using windows XP… Right click on the drive and select properties. The 2 first things you should see on top are “type” and “File system”. If “File system” says NTFS” then skip everything I’m gonna say below, it’s not the issue…
If it says FAT32, that means it’s using the old format system, and that limits the size of any file saved to the drive to up to 2GB, hence the “disk full” error. Before you reformat, of course you have to save everything you have on that drive somewhere else, or it will all be lost.
You can reformat by simply right clicking on the dive and selecting format. Make sure “file system” is set to NTFS, click start, and go walk the dog for a while 😉
