Although I just became Certified on FCP 7 Level 1 this past year, I have been an editor over many platforms for the past 12 years. On a whim I decided to buy the book and take the exam. It was sorta fun, I did learn a few things that I did not use in the past and my attention to learning new shortcuts and workflows has grown. It has also readdressed my interests in Final Cut Studio when other edit suites seem to be ahead of the curve in some ways. Alone it might not get you a job. But its good to hear the boss walk potential clients by my edit suit and say, “here is one of our Apple Certified Editors.” I am the only one of 6 editors and I laugh every time I hear it because I only took the Level 1 exam. So was it worth it? For me I would say yes. Would I continue? If time allows, probably yes.

Have not used this workflow. Would you not lose the clips meta data? Timecode, log notes, the ability to match frame to the original clip or bin? Not to mention reconnecting to offline media. Sounds risky.

I purchased the Mercury Elite-AL Pro Qx2 about 6 months ago for some smaller projects. It is set at Raid 5 for DV and HD projects. It has worked great with no problems. The unit has gotten about 6 hours of use everyday and even run a solid 12 hours on some weekends with no hickup that I could see.

Sounds like one/both of the clips/audio tracks do not have handles to allow for the transition you desire.
For a better explanation search Handles in the FCP User Manual under the help menu.
You can also check for handles by pressing the S key and then clicking on the clip/audio you want to add the transition to. A grey highlight will show you how much extra media you have available to add the transition.

After Duplicating a sequence I always “Lock the video and audio tracks” of the old sequence to prevent me from accidentally making corrections to it. IF I need to I can always unlock them later.
I also place the old sequences in a folder in my bin labeled SequencesOLD. It helps me keep things manageable.Victor

The “Report dropped frames during playback” is in FCPs User Preferences “OPTION Q” look in the General Tab.
Various things can cause FCP to drop frames, making sure there is no media or renders on your System Drive is a good place to start.
And yes having the Dropped frame window pop up every so often is a pain, but the reason it pops up is to warn you of a problem. Fixing it as soon as possible is a best practice as noted above.

We use Carbon Copy Cloner to back up all 6 of our Mac Pro System drives and have had to rely on our copies twice in the last year and everything had been recovered from the clone including the pro apps. As of yet we havn’t had a problem with CC Cloner.
As for media files we shoot XDCam HD so all our raw material is still on the XDCam Discs.

If you are able to re-shoot the man and frame video, placing a green card or blue card (green screen or blue screen like) only over the hole in the picture frame would let you key out the green or blue color that is inside of the frame and let you place your still image behind the track. This would let the arm move over the frame and not be cut off. Unless he is wearing a blue or green shirt of course.

If I understand correctly. You have placed a garbage matte on the Video clip of a man standing by a picture frame in order to place a still image behind the hole created by the garbage matte. If the matte is placed on the clip with the arm moving, anything in that clip that crosses over the parameters of the garbage matte will be cut.
If the Still image that goes inside the frame is on a video layer above the video clip of the man standing by the picture frame, his arm goes behind the still on layer V-2.
