    Hi All,

Just a quick question regarding two RAIDS that i am choosing between…before i say anything else i am more than sure that there are better RAID configurations/brands out there. But with my limited budget i am about to buy my first RAID system to edit with via FCP/FCS with a bit AE work.

Largely i will working with small HD projects and HDV (4-5 multi-camera projects) so i won’t need too much space at any given time; 2TB of active RAID space should be fine.

What does everyone think of these solutions

with either one of these RAIDs i will most likely be using them in a RAID 5 configuration with 4 x 2TB drives installed.

P.S. I won’t be purchasing this till i also purchase the 2010 Mac Pro…which may finally include some sort of decent SoftRAID 5/10 capability that suits my needs.

(Hopefuly Walter Biscardi doesn’t laugh too hard at my suggestions 🙂 )

I purchased the Mercury Elite-AL Pro Qx2 about 6 months ago for some smaller projects. It is set at Raid 5 for DV and HD projects. It has worked great with no problems. The unit has gotten about 6 hours of use everyday and even run a solid 12 hours on some weekends with no hickup that I could see.

Keep in mind that RAID performance degrades as it fills up, so you might want to go with 4 larger drives for 4 or 6TB of total storage. It really depends on how much storage you expect to use at any one time. And with RAID 5, 20% of the drive space will be used to store parity information. I went with a 6TB RAID not expecting to fill it more than 50%. BTW, while I don’t own the OWC RAID unit you mention, I have owned Mercury Elite drives which have been excellent.

What kind of performance are you getting with the OWC when editing HD footage? Are you using ProRes422? Full 1080p?

I just bought a Qx2, but haven’t been that impressed (even at RAID 0).

    Thanks.

I have a few projects that I bring in as Prores 422 to consolidate the mixed shooting formats of HDV/DVCPro/DV into a ProRes HD sequence. The Raid is set to Raid 5 and connected via eSATA from a Cal Digit Fasta2e Card. The box has been very solid. Have not run the speed test lately, but things render quickly (ProRes) as long as all media is comparable format in sequence.

Thank you for the reply Victor. I have a few more questions though.

I guess this may show my ignorance, but I thought render speed was determined by the processor and RAM on your computer, and had nothing to do with the RAID. I thought the RAID just allowed for multi stream editing (maybe multiple cameras, etc.) Am I incorrect? Should I expect a render speed increase when switching from a firewire RAID to an eSATA RAID?

    Thanks,

    – Chad

Hey Victor (or anybody) when running the AJA System test on my Mercury Qx2 enclosure (set to RAID 0) – I’m only getting a write speed of 173MB/s (and a read of 241MB/s).
It seems the write speed should be around 200MB/s. I suspect this is the eSATA card I am using (NewTech MaxPower 6G RAID).

Can anyone confirm and suggest how to get better speed?

    Thanks.
