Then the suggested workflow is absolutely OK.

BTW, I’m currently playing around with Colorista too, and what I’ve seen until now is pretty good for the price. I’d like to see better handling of the power window, but that’s a problem Apple needs to fix. Already much better than needing two tracks and a separate mask.

Many of those screens have pretty poor de-interlacers. I’d try to de-interlace the footage you feed to 1080p with the help of FieldsKit (there is a demo at http://www.revisionfx.com ) and see if that helps.

Apart from that: which resolution is reported back to the Mini by that screen? Sometimes you get weird values there and I’ve seen Acer’s that were reported back as interlaced (!), so the Mac tried to compensate for that and it looked awful.

Don’t give up, you’ll get there. We get excellent quality feeding a Sony Ruby with a Mini in 1080p via DVI.

IMHO the best software de-interlacer for a decent price is FieldsKit. Check the demo at http://www.revisionfx.com

I have no problems using referenced QTs whatsoever. Yes, the compression marks get tranferred. Yes, it will use source material wherever possible (which can be a big plus). There are really no disadvantages apart from the need to have all sources online.

The Firestore is much faster. It’s USB that sucks on the Mac.

The fastest is transfer via a PCMCIA-slot on an older PowerBook or a PC laptop. We use an Acer Aspire with 1280 screen for HDV Rack (great product, BTW) and also for ingest from the cards, later copy it to a HFS+ drive (with the help of MacDrive on the laptop) and happily edit away in FCP.

I’ve had similar experiences with AE 7 and it’s not there in AE 6.5 (which doesn’t even know the format!).
Strange quirk, but I didn’t have the time to further look into this. One thing you could try, though:

Set up a new sequence in FCP to 1280 x 720 (or whatever format you use) with square pixels and motion quality set to best, put your edited timeline into this and render. Might help.
