We got good results in Boujou without this info, but it should be 1/3″ diagonally, like all the rest in this class. More exact dimensions might be hard to find in a manual, but you can use Phytagoras and the fact that it’s 16:9 to find out…

Such things can happen, but they have nothing to do with use by software. There are quite a few electronic parts that are ageing, condensors in power supplies in particular, but they’d age in a computer being switched on and idling along just the same.
I can’t confirm that Macs are worse in this respect than PCs, actually they are better. I’ve been working in a polytechnical institute and in an arts university for many years, both with lots of PCs and Macs, and I ‘ve seen more PCs die than Macs over those years.
Sorry for your experience,
Uli
BTW, an UPS with surge filter can extend a computer’s life in critical regions.

Even if there’s one thing missing: We used to have that nice little decoding window built into A.Pack…
But I don’t wish those ole days of multi-cpu crashes back.

No, we don’t normally need 23.98 or 24, but 25p and 50p in 1280 by 720. BTW, 720p50 is the official recommendation by EBU (European Broadcasting union) for the years to come (until 1080p50 get’s possible). So it will be very important in Europe, could you please tell that to them?
A collegue from Germany found a way to handle DVCProHD in 720p50 very well in FCP already, even if it’s not officially supported yet by Apple. I can send you his document in English, if that helps, or we can do testing of any firmware changes in our institute.

Definitely try FieldsKit for de-interlacing, IMHO it’s the best out there. We are using it a lot for SD <-> HD conversions in tests at our university research institute.
For enlarging SD to HD, give Instant HD (Red Giant) or ReSizer (Digital Anarchy) a try. Both are very close in quality, but Instant HD is cheaper, while ReSizer is faster. BTW, ReSizer includes a de-interlacer, feel free to compare it to FieldsKit. IMHO, it’s awfully slow while it still doesn’t match the quality. We have settled on ReSizer 2.1 plus FieldsKit, and the results are the best you can get this side of a serious hardware converter, the Teranex Mini, starting from 3 K$…

No, sorry, that won’t work. You footage will look very stuttery.
Either get yourself the G Converter from Graeme Nattress (www.nattress.com), which is very decently priced and does a good conversion or go to a service house with a high-end hardware converter. Some people might suggest Compressor, which can look a tad better than Nattress’, but it’s awfully slow.

We have a very similar configuration here (Dual G5 2 Ghz, 4 GB RAM, X800) and MacPro (2.66 GHz, 4 GB RAM, X1900). The MacPro considerably outperforms the G5 now that we removed the original 512 MB modules which we initially left in to have 5 GB. We are considering getting two more 512 MB modules to make them useful again.
It’s like this with the MacPro: paired RAM is a must (or it won’t work), but equal pairs will give you an additional boost.
One thing that springs to my mind: You don’t have accidentially set your FCP on the MacPro to run under Rosetta to make use of older Plug-Ins, or do you?

Then, please, Shane also ask him about European frequencies with 720p. We own (and like!) the MXO but are missing these very much.

But then I’d rather opt for 720p50. It’s gonna look smoother. I thought you want to transfer to film.
