What’s your P2 Transfer Speed on a G5?
I copied some P2 files from Panasonic’s P2 Store stand-alone USB contraption last week. Some of the files were on it’s hard drive, while the others were on the inserted P2 8Gb card. I copied them over to Firewire 800 drive.
My average transfer speed was about 10 minutes per Gigabyte. No, I don’t have that backwards. This seems extraordinarily long. What’s everybody else’s experience?Love,

From the P2 Store to my G5 via USB 2.0…yeah, a bit slow. I had better luck with 5 min per GB. This is a think that you start and then go to bed for. What is what we did at the end of the shoot day at the hotel.
From the card to drive it is 1GB per min, but from the P2 Store…oddly we had that slow rate.

Makes it slower than real time then. I was hoping for 4-5x realtime transfer speeds to be able to use it on quick turnaround live events, etc.
Is the firestore like this as well?Love,

Well, the transfer from P2 card to the P2 Store is faster than real time. You use it that way on live events, then back it up to portable HDs at night.
Dunno about the Firestore. Never used one.

Man, I get nowhere near that time. You should try copying the lastclip.txt file first, and then copy the contents folder.

The Firestore is much faster. It’s USB that sucks on the Mac.
The fastest is transfer via a PCMCIA-slot on an older PowerBook or a PC laptop. We use an Acer Aspire with 1280 screen for HDV Rack (great product, BTW) and also for ingest from the cards, later copy it to a HFS+ drive (with the help of MacDrive on the laptop) and happily edit away in FCP.

My producer called me this morning. He said that on the first day of shooting they had the same issue…20 min for a 4GB P2 volume to transfer from the P2 Store to the LaCie Porche backup drive. That wasn’t right…and so he tried something. (I like my producer, he is very technical)
He purchased and downloaded P2 Genie from Anders Holck (the guy who gave us the great FCP Rescue) for $33 dollars and used it to transfer the footage. It took between 2 and 4 min for each volume. WHY? It’s anybodies guess. But he opened the application, chose to have the process be MANUAL so that he could set the destination and then he pressed GO.
It detected each NO_NAME volume and downloaded the footage in under 30 min.
I already knew the P2 Genie was a great application. I beta tested it. Try it and see what it does for you guys:
