That makes sense- 4k takes a lot of RAM to preview and for AE 14 GB is not a lot. 32 or even 64 GB is a more adequate amount, especially if you work in 4k. Try a half resolution or even a third- that should give you longer previews.

You could trace the letter shape in Illustrator, but there’s got to be a bug- never had that issue before… Did you contact the Videocopilot team- they’re pretty fast at getting back to you.

Are you applying Shatter to the masked layer directly? Try pre composing the masked layer and then apply Shatter.

What size frames are we talking about- makes a big difference if they’re SD or 4k…

Of course that the faster processor is desirable, but if I had to choose I would max out the RAM and invest in a top of the line Nvidia card on a slower processor since CS6 and above makes really good use of that type of card.

Even if you do not have any effects in AE, if you link the comp in Premiere it will always need to render for smooth playback. One way of doing this is to render out the AE comp, import and place the result on a video track in Premiere on top of the linked comp and turn that layer off. This way you get real time playback (if the format you render in permits that) and you keep the linked segment editable.

Color Grading in AE can be done in many different ways. Color Finesse is a great plugin but there are also alternatives – Colorista 2 is a very powerful option (there’s a free version as well that does a heck of a job). Magic Bullet- another option, especially if you are looking for presets. Also, the ability to use Adjustment layers, Pre-comps and Masks enables you to grade with just the regular native plugins – Curves, Hue/Saturation, Levels…
