Troubleshooting Dynamic Link
I have a bit of extra time this weekend and am spending it ‘troubleshooting’ the slowdown in dynamic-link between Premiere and After Effects. I know there’s a lot of stuff going on when I use DL, but is still seems to be slow even on a rather powerful PC.
Running Creative Suite on Intel i7 / VistaUlt / 12gb / SSDs / 64-bit. I can right-click on a clip in PPro and select ‘replace with AE Comp,’ everything works. But playing, scrubbing or outputting seems erratic and slow even if there are no effects applied in AE.
When playing a linked clip from PPro, the Task Manager shows that the 8 cores are approximately even at about 35%, so CPU processing is not the limiting factor. Resource Monitor shows disk and memory well below 100%.
If I didn’t know better, I’d think there was a ‘wait’ instruction somewhere in Adobe’s code. How do I find out what is keeping DL from fully utilizing the horsepower in my PC?

Even if you do not have any effects in AE, if you link the comp in Premiere it will always need to render for smooth playback. One way of doing this is to render out the AE comp, import and place the result on a video track in Premiere on top of the linked comp and turn that layer off. This way you get real time playback (if the format you render in permits that) and you keep the linked segment editable.

Ted, when exporting from AE, if you have “Project Link” checked (by default I think), even after you add the rendered AE movie to the timeline, you can open the AE project by selecting “Edit Original” in PrP.

But I still can’t figure out what’s happening that throttles PPro / AE to less than 40% of processing horsepower that is available.

I had the similar problem, and going after the processes that CS5 used to do the dynamic link I discovered that the middle process was not running on 64 bit.
When I changed to CS6 the DL is working way better, but still not like we want it too.I think that we need to keep in mind that is not that simple to send from a timeline to a comp, and have everything running smooth like rain. I also think that the hard drive speeds might have something to do with it.
It would be awesome to find where the bottle neck is because there is no more general hardware upgrades that I can think of to solve this.Nice post Mr Arco.

This is normal, because Ae does not use multiprocessing when using dynamic link to Pr. I recommend caching or pre-rendering the comp in Ae for best performance.
