What exactly do you mean by that- a bit more information about what you are trying to achieve can prove useful. Are you trying to shatter/explode a layer in pieces that you can individually control after? Is it a video/image layer or vector art?

I am not that familiar with Motion so I can’t compare them, but I know AE quite well. The thing that sets this package apart is the wealth of third party plugins, free and paid preset projects, and exceedingly numerous tutorials that you can find on almost anything. The package itself comes with a series of preset animations for text and other and the Adobe website has quite a few useful links to presets, but the real wealth is found in websites like the COW, aetuts+, videocopilot, allbetsareoff and many others. I would say that the AE community provides a ecosystem bigger than any other similar package.

FreeForm Pro can help you achieve something similar to the mirror ripple. Check out the example below:

If you have a clean plate you may be able to replace the piece of cardboard with a still, add the rope and animate using Newton for realistic physics.

Not sure I understand your issue. The Particular layer should be a 2d layer on top of all your other layers. The plugin matches the 3d space of the particle system with the AE one. Not sure what you mean by
“the clouds are formed in the middle of the world too”? You can position your emitter where ever you want. As far as having an object in between particles, use a depth map. I think this may be of use:

  • So, without expressions:
If the diameters of the gears differ, you need to do some math to figure out how each gear rotates in reference to the one before. Select the initial gear and calculate based on the number of teeth how many full rotations you get on the next gear for one full 360 rotation on the first gear. For the exact number of teeth and diameter it should be 1 to 1. A smaller gear will rotate faster, thus you get 1.x times and a larger one slower, thus 0.x times. Then using this method you determine the ratio for the second and third gears and so on. Using the above you can start figuring out the values for the final keyframes on rotation for each wheel. If lets say you want the initial gera to rotate 3 times for the length of your comp, then based on the info you got previously you can calculate the amount of rotations for the second wheel:
    3 x 1.X= Y rotations.
Then you can use this number and the initial calculation for the difference between the second and third gear ( let’s say for 1 rotation of the second gear you determined that the third one rotates 2.Z times)
    The data you have:
    gear 2, 1 rotation – gear 3, 2.Z rotations
    and
gear 2 rotates Y times (as per your calculation relating to the first gear rotating 3 times)
    gear 3 final rotation = 2.Z x Y

And so on… it sounds pretty complex although it’s not really, but I strongly suggest digging in expressions, it will make your life easier.

  • All the answers are good in theory, it would help though to see what you have in your mirror and to know what kind of object you need to add. It makes a world of difference if your object is static or if it is moving. Also, the type of camera move matters.
In theory you could track just the image reflected in the mirror and add a static object (flipped on the Y axis) in there using the camera move as tracked in the mirror.
