  • First thought that came to me was to track the camera in the shot, cut a mask for the mirror and build a couple of 3d layers – one with the lamp that’s in front of the mirror (close to the camera) and the second with the back of the wall that’s behind the actor (use the same wall paper and maybe put a different painting on it – but in the distance to create a nice parallax).

A practical effect like Dave suggested may be the way to go- but then again, it all depends on the look/style of your project. It may be that even a 2d animated squirt may work, in which case Newton may help you. You can also make that volumetric if you combine Newton with ShapeShifter AE.

  • It looks like Trapcode Form and Plexus where involved also.

No re-scaling. You want your image to be squeezed because it will be stretched back in playback.
Study a bit about anamorphic – it’s something you should know:

  • Roland has pointed out the issue with your post. More info can help us narrow down the problem.
One suggestion I have in situations like this is to render a sequence of files and if AE crashes you will know exactly at what frame. This enables you to identify possible issues faster and you do not loose your render. In some situations I had just one frame that was causing the issue. I was able to render all after. Sometimes it was a crash caused by having motion blur starting on that particular frame – rendering just that one frame without motion blur and applying a “fake” one after enabled me to string all frames in one sequence and render out the final piece using my delivery codec.
That may not be your case though – give us more info and maybe we can help.

  • I see this as a step forward and beneficial for all AE users, weather they use C4D or not. It gives all other developers of 3D plugins for AE a reason to step it up and it opens a world of possibilities. I can see Element 3D adding more tools or Newton physics being integrated with the speed of Mettle plugins in a whole new 3d render engine that allows for interaction with AE 3d layers… Sky is the limit here. I say this pushes the limits again to our benefit and I’m pretty excited even though I did not previously use C4D.

The noise issue can be avoided if you use the “Intermediate result” and not the final output.
