Are the “objects” 3d layers in AE or 3d objects imported with a plugin?
What do you call the ground? Is it the one contained in the file that textures horizon? If so, you need to create a 3d layer as the ground, set it in 3d space to match the horizon ground level, Use Motion tile to expand it if it’s a texture that can be tiled, if not just create a large size file for that layer. Then you can intersect AE 3d layers with it and they will stick with the ground as the camera moves. If you’re using Zaxwerks to bring in 3d objects it’s a bit more tricky but it can be done still.Tudor “Ted” Jelescu

March 3, 2011 at 4:08 pm in reply to: Colour and brightness editing of footage from 2 different cameras to matchYou will need some color correction for both cameras. Bring the lighter clip a bit down and the darker up. Color finesse or Colorista can help, but regular AE plugins like Levels, Curves or Hue and Saturation can be of use as well. Since your darker footage will probably look noisy, you may want to ad some noise to the lighter one. Best way to deal with this in my opinion is to define a new look for the footage involving heavy color grading that can be achieved on both sources and thus hide the initial difference.

Sweet script Nathan, a much more elegant way of doing it!

Here’s a way of doing it, a bit tricky though. You need to create a texture layer for particles (sprite) in Particular, that will contain all 2000 names. Create a comp 2000 frames long, that is big enough to accommodate the longest name in its width- use 12point text. Export the Excel to a text file. Make sure that each name is on it’s own line of text. Copy and paste that file on a text layer in AE. Space the lines of text so that only one name is seen in the first frame. Set keyframe on Y axis. Go to last frame and move up on Y axis the text to frame the last name only. Precomp that and use as sprite texture layer – you have different ways of applying the texture- takes all frames sequentially or random… fit to your needs. Now you need to setup the particles to emit in one line or however you need to have them appear to the camera.

Buy a Mac… just kidding, the problem I think is that you only have 3GB of RAM which is peanuts for AE. The minimum recommended RAM per processing core is 2GB, so adding some RAM to your system may solve the issue.

I would use Particular to create some cool swirls on the dancers. You would have to animate lights in 3d space to match the rotation perspective for the dancers, use that as a particle emitter, play with the visibility for the particles to make them disappear behind the dancers and create the “iPod commercial” light streaks around them. Once you have those (using multiple emitters/lights) you can play at will by creating glowing light swirls (in 32 bit project)or just use them to create a alpha layer that you can use to comp the layer on top of itself while using Time effects on it (Echo).

AE has now more than enough capabilities to do that kind of simple 3d. Use PSD to create the 3d objects, open the 3d psd layers in AE and animate, or use the more elegant and powerful solution from Zaxwerks- Invigorator ( I recommend the Pro version), where you can import simple vector shapes from AI, and create the 3d elements, then link those elements to a 3d layer in AE and animate at will.

Best to open up the AE comp in Adobe Media Encoder and render from there. AE does not do very well when it comes to encoding to compressed formats, that’s what Encoder is for.

I agree with Joey – AE should never be used to adjust audio- the audio capabilities are for animation timing and preview purposes only. Premiere, Soundbooth, FCP are good to work audio, but if you do not have them, Audacity is a free audio editing software that will do the job.
