Not sure I understand correctly your issue, but FreeForm creates a 3d object and you have to thing about the image and displacement layers as “texture” and “modeling” layers. So the more detail you want in the texture or in the displacement / modeling, the larger the image should be. Texture and displacement map layers should be the same size though.

I think AE needs more than one source, because it is quite complex in itself, not to mention when you add 3rd party plugins.
I would start here on the COW – plenty of tutorial for basic stuff and more complex ones. Adobe is also a good place to get basic information. For more advanced tutorials, aetuts+, videocopilot and the 3rd party plugin sites. This should get you started.Tudor “Ted” Jelescu

Free Form and FreeForm Pro have 3d distortion points that can be controlled with expressions. Also, the 3d displacement from this plugin can be controlled by a displacement map that can be animated in AE using expressions.

You could use a Fractal Noise (animated) layer as a displacement map to displace just the water area. You can use the same layer (duplicated) with the Levels crushed (to see highlights only) and Glow applied to it, comped on top with a Add or Screen transfer mode.
Another way would be to use FreeForm Pro to generate water using the AquaPack:

You can go down to 15, even 12 fps and that would cut the size- however 100kb seems really small.

Not seeing the shot it’s hard to say, but it does sound like a job for Mocha.

“a 15 sec video” is a broad description – what is the frame size, the frame rate and the final delivery codec?
For best results you should use a compression package like Adobe Media Encoder. This will provide a 2pass variable bit rate (VBR)compression for smaller files with better quality.Tudor “Ted” Jelescu
