Jeremy – I’m not completely clear what you are asking, but in the Event Browser, set you in point with “I” and then “control-D”, then “3 period” to change the duration of your selection to 3 seconds.

Alternatively you could just bring multiple clips to your timeline, select them and hit control-D again with the “3.” and you’ll change the duration of all the shots to 3 seconds.

I’m sure there are other ways to help you speed up what you are doing. You could post a screen capture of your current workflow and perhaps we could help you further. I’m really shocked at how there are many ways to accomplish tasks in FCP X, and I’ll be happy to share.

This is a difficult call to make, the media management is superior and the editing is much faster. However, I would admit that FCP X just isn’t there yet as a reliable tool.

For example I am working on a short product demo, 5 minutes or so. Shot on DSLR. Delivery will be for the web and DVDs. Everything is going great, but while I was editing yesterday suddenly the audio will stutter, and then the viewer might stop working, or when I zoom the playhead it will go to a seemingly random spot on the timeline, or the keyboard shortcuts just stop working.

In my opinion this is going to drive you crazy and might give you the urge to toss your Mac out the window. Plus it gets a little awkward when you are sitting with a client and you have to explain what the little spinning beach ball is, and why you just had to force quit FCP X, again.

Believe it or not I actually love FCP X, it is just buggy. My shop is not only fully committed to it, but we have switched all our new projects to be FCP X. However, we are a small advertising agency and we can afford some learning curve.

Regarding getting your project out of FCP X. I agree I haven’t been able to get automatic duck to create a valid file, even for a tiny project. I just wouldn’t count on it. FoolCut or x27 seem to be the real deal, and can be counted on.

However, if you have an understanding director and not a crazy short deadline, I would consider it. But if you just gotta get it done to put food on the table, go with a proven tool in FCP 7.

I too have exported un-rendered projects, it is very fast for basic things like color correction and titles. So fast in fact, that I’ve turned off the background rendering and don’t bother manually rendering either. It’s working very well.

BTW. My config doesn’t handle h264 really well. It can playback simple cuts, but I am still having FCP X create optimized media, which is a ProRes version of the files.

Be sure to get the demo of FCP X before you take the plunge.

So, what kind of projects do you work on? We are an advertising agency and FCP X works well for our workflow, but it might not work for everyone.

I have the same MacPro that is unfortunately getting a little long in the tooth when it comes to FCP X. However, mine works pretty well with a Radeon 5770 from the Apple Store. It’s about $250.

You’ll need more RAM also. I would say at minimum 12 GB. So that would be another $300 or so.

As an update on this issue, we got it resolved. This project began in 10.0.0 and then had some relinking issues and then it updated to 10.0.1, so I suspect the problems were compounded in the update.

To fix this I got the FCPXML files for the event and I was able to find out there were corrupted clips. Attempting to reimport the XML resulted in a crash for FCP X. So here is what the bad clips looked like in the xml:

As you can see the id=”r1″ is an declared as undefined, so that seemed the likely problem.

While here is what a good clip looks like:

I deleted the bad clips from the XML resaved and then in imported without a problem.
