    Hello, All:
I think I’m ready to dive into FCPX, but, I need to upgrade the GPU on my aging Mac Pro. Can someone please recommend a solid card to install. Thanks in advance.

I have the same MacPro that is unfortunately getting a little long in the tooth when it comes to FCP X. However, mine works pretty well with a Radeon 5770 from the Apple Store. It’s about $250.

You’ll need more RAM also. I would say at minimum 12 GB. So that would be another $300 or so.

    My 2 cents.

Thanks, Tim. That’s great information. And, yeah, I knew I’d have to increase the RAM too, so, that’s gonna bite the wallet.
    Much appreciated.

BTW. My config doesn’t handle h264 really well. It can playback simple cuts, but I am still having FCP X create optimized media, which is a ProRes version of the files.

Be sure to get the demo of FCP X before you take the plunge.

So, what kind of projects do you work on? We are an advertising agency and FCP X works well for our workflow, but it might not work for everyone.

I work in broadcast. Primarily commercial and promo production. We had just recently upgraded all our News, Promo and Commercial suites to FCS 3 and then a year later Apple dropped the bomb. So, as I see it, the plant has a few good years left with FCP 7 and then they’ll have to make another decision. The system I’ve described is my home suite that I use to do hobby and freelance work. I’ve followed the FCPX furor since it all came down and I’m intrigued enough that I want to start using it at home. I get to learn something new, it’s affordable and it will probably do 90% of what I need.
