The problem with FCP X is that it doesn’t let you change the interpretation of pixel aspect ratio for clips. (Crazy! I know. A huge oversight in my opinion. If I could get access to the code, I would teach myself XCode and add that feature in a few hours. In fact here is where it should be:)

I was about to loose a bunch of sleep on this issue but then just scaled the unrecognized anamorphic footage 133% on the X axis so it would fit my 16×9 anamorphic SD project in FCP X. Works perfectly. And you don’t need to render this stretched stuff before you export, FCP X will take care of it on export and it won’t add any time to your export. See this post for more info:

I was getting this in 10.0.0, but then I updated to 10.0.1 and removed Perian at the same time. So one of those things fixed it.

I feel your pain. But I think it is solvable, as it sounds like something is corrupted. A few things to try:

1 – If you locate the original clip in the browser and the replace in the timeline does it still not have the stabilization option?

2 – If #1 didn’t help, export your Event to XML (deselect all clips in the event browser, then click on the event from the Event Library, then File > Export XML.) and then reimport. Don’t worry this won’t effect your original event, it will import a copy. You will loose shot/take and reel numbers (unexplainably they are not supported in FCPXML 1.0) but if that is a big deal to a batch rename to your clip names to include the shot/take and reel. Then try #1 again with the new event and see if that solves it.

2a – If you are far along with editing you could try exporting and reimporting your project as XML.

3 – If #1 and #2 don’t work. I would call Apple.

4 – If the call to Apple doesn’t fix it. Let us know and perhaps someone here would be willing to screen share with you and try to resolve it (I would be more than happy to help you out.)

One more question. How far along in editing are you? Is your rough cut done, or are you just getting started?

I just did a test right now on my system with a Canon HV30 (HDV camera) and FCP X did simultaneous live capture and record to tape without a problem. However, I needed to start the recording on the camera get the timecode going, and then click “import”. If you don’t start your camera first clicking import will look like it is doing something but the import window will not show camera recording.

I was able to plug in an older Sony SD camera and FCP X did let me start importing without the camera rolling but it didn’t actually import anything.

So it does work, you’ll just have to experiment to see if you have to start recording on the camera first, etc.

FCP X wasn’t really made for live recording as it doesn’t have any scopes while recording, etc. so if you have further needs why don’t you look into a dedicated app like this:

I’ve done some live capture in FCP X. But I never tried (or thought) to record to tape at the same time.

What exactly is the trouble you are having. Can you explain in more detail what doesn’t work?

You can accomplish this with roles easily (in FCPX 10.0.1). Create and assign clips to each roll for each stereo pair (or mono channel) and then Share > Export Media. Selecting “Roles as multitrack Quicktime Movie” and then assign your roles to multitracks.
