  • Do I use X for a 1/2 hour broadcast doc. ?

Posted by Jonathan White on November 2, 2011 at 4:51 pm

Decision time tomorrow, I’d love to use X and I find it hard to go back to 7… but I’m working with a client and I can’t afford screwups…. has anyone cut a doc for broadcast on X and used Automatic duck for the OMF?

[Jonathan White] “used Automatic duck for the OMF”

From the admittedly limited tests I have done with AD and FCPX, I’d advise you to be very wary of using it in a real world situation until you’ve looked into all the issues.

My main concern (among others) is that once you detach an audio clip from its video “parent”, AD seems to lose all notion of what it’s meant to be.

Maybe this is down to specific problems with my tests, but do check out that this at least will work reliably in the context of your project before going ahead.

Actually I’m hoping someone with more experience of it will chime in here and say there’s nothing to worry about with Automatic Duck/FCPX, all you need to do is X, Y or Z …

But I get the feeling (which could be completely wrong) that very few people have actually tried it yet – there’s been only one discussion about it using it so far in these forums that I’ve seen, and that came up because someone else had a less than ideal experience.

You’ve also got to remember that there is now no-one to turn to at Automatic Duck if you have problems – and for that reason alone I’d be a bit concerned about using it for your project.

    Hi Jonathan,

Not sure when your project is due to kick off but have you considered using X27 to export your audio out to FCP7 and then via OMF to either Logic or Pro Tools?

I’ve been unsuccessful in my experiment with Magic Duck – but probably due to ineptness in try to send audio from FCPX to Logic Pro as an experiment.

I’m sure if audio is your only concern that there would be a way of exporting audio tracks out in various combinations and then re-importing once you have worked on them.

One thing I have found on longer projects is that construction the programme in short segments on within different projects and then as you are getting nearer to completion assembling the segments in a new project is more effective as working on a long complicated project (timeline) seems to get very sticky.

Maybe you will split the work between FCPX and FCP7?

Kicks off tomorrow morning and I’m keen to use X as I love it’s media management…. I’m happy to toss it around between 7 and X as long as it works! I’ll check out X27… it’s a drama doc. shot on red 4k, I’ve already converted to 2k Pro res in FCP…I’ve also experimented with XML conversion with DaVinci… don’t like messing around with broadcast projects but I’m very keen to use X, it’s so much quicker!!
Thanks for all the advice everyone… maybe I’ll be the guinea pig 🙂

Also check out this thread – which is the Automatic Duck discussion I was talking about.

You’ll need to scroll down till you see the post from Pedro de la Fuente. He ended up going the slightly roundabout X27 route, which sounds like it’s a better option for now.

Remember that AD ProEx 5 was developed for FCP X version 10.0 before Apple implemented the XML and Roles features. The .01 release broke a few things, which the Foolcut folks found out. Quite possible that it broke something with AD as well. Since at that point the move was made to Adobe, ProEx 5 may well be stuck in that 10.0 version.

    Jonathan,

You can certainly try anything you like, but I honestly think you are taking a HUGE risk. If you do go down the FCP X route, please let us know how it went.

There are plenty of posts around these two forums about corrupt projects, media offline, not saving edits, etc. to indicate that X is still pretty bug-ridden. It seems to be optimized for short projects, like corporate event videos and news stories. My gut tells me this will reach some level of reliability around version 3, which was the case with FCP 3.

Remember, the pioneers are those with the arrows in their backs 😉

and some of us are using it every day without these issues. I’ve also edited 2 x 90 minute shows with over 40 hours of rushes with no major issues as well.

However I’m not saying you won’t get the issues that Oliver mentioned as they have happened to others!

I’m enjoying editing with it but hopefully x27 will give you the option to bale out if the going gets tough!

I don’t disagree at all. The risk is that if something DOES go wrong there is no back-up. Or it would involve re-doing potentially a considerable amount of work. I find with the handful of projects I’ve tossed at it, the app gets more bogged down with more media (all of it ProRes) and with lots of projects.
