Just a note, regular rendering or background rendering in FCP X doesn’t use the GPU. Exporting does use it and is ridiculously faster.
For example 20 second timeline. 5 layers of 1080p, h264. Created optimized media. Color board correction on each, made each move and zoom, etc.
Modify > Render All — 17.5 minutes
Changed a clip, now the entire timeline shows orange and needing to render:
Share > Export Media – Current Settings (prores) — 1.5 minutes
(I also did a h264 export 1 minute 50 seconds)10x faster Exporting than using the GPU. It’s curious why FCP X doesn’t use the GPU for regular rendering. Perhaps it will be turned on soon.

Luke. It won’t add that capability directly to FCP X because FCP X doesn’t directly access QuickTime Components (which Flip4Mac is).
I don’t know if you really need Flip4Mac if you just need it for a single project. There are a bunch of online services that will do it for free from a h264 file. LIke this one:

Quick solution for you. Just precompose the 4×3 shot in a 16×9 compound clip.
Then it is easy to do the rest in Motion. Here is an effect to get you started.

Just to clarify, did the footage originate in DVCProHD or ProResHQ?
Where do you have the current edit in FCP 7 or FCP X, or just an EDL?

Wierd. So did you copy the original media to the Final Cut Event folders, or are you referencing media from elsewhere?
Also, the analysis files live in the Event folder under “Analysis Files”. There are several types of analysis files. Stabilization, People and Color Balance. See here:
It doesn’t hurt to reanalyze, it will only analyze what is not already analyzed, and not overwrite anything.
As far as their smart collections not showing up that is another odd one, but you can recreate them.Select all your clips, right-click to analyze and make sure the “find people” and “create smart collections after analysis” is checked. It won’t actually do an analysis, just recreate the smart collections:

Indeed that is a good point. Notes that are transferred in the timeline index right now are only clip notes, not the favorite notes. Granted, you can rename favorites or actually put a note on a favorite, but they won’t show up in the timeline index. There are notes for each favorite in the timeline but those are not transferred to the even browser. 😉
My suggestion at this point would be that if you need notes in the timeline index, and therefore the timeline, to put the notes in markers within the favorite selections, as you are just at the first stages of your project.
If you already have alot logged, you’d think there would be a way to copy the notes to markers automatically, and while it is possible via FCPXML, there are no tools for doing that right now except for maybe CATDV. You could try a demo.

Simon – regarding Automatic Duck it does export files, but I couldn’t get anything to work at first when going AAF or OMF to Soundtrack Pro. However, I found if I changed the settings to created external files, it would work. Perhaps that is in the documentation, but I don’t have it.
It is not prefect, so I would still have the option of roles as individual files to bring into STP or ProTools.
I’m sure someone is working on some kind universal FCPXML to whatever tool. I would write one myself if I had the time.

Jonahtan – you are a brave man!
You can view notes when in the timeline. Just open up the timeline index. They are searchable too.
Besides favorites, I also combine all multiple takes in auditions. This really helps cut down on the amount of footage I am working with.
Another thing that has been very helpful for organization is to use Titles as markers to delineate different areas of my project. They are much better than regular markers because you can read the titles, and you can select them to get the duration of that section. I create a role called “Section Markers” and then turn that tole off so they turn grey. I then am able to easily navigate and keep track of sections for a larger timeline.
