BTW. I copied the effect and turned off motion blur — nice and fast now. I can always swap out the version with motion blur.
I wonder if there is a way to publish the motion blur setting?

If you don’t see anything in the firewire list then the computer just doesn’t see the device. Here is what my firewire bus looks like with a a miniDV camera, and a few other things connected:
Sounds like your Ninja is the way to go.
The other alternative is to borrow/rent/buy another HDV deck or camera. I”ll be someone has a Canon HV 30 laying around (I do). If time is more important than money I would suggest that as you injesting will go much faster with FCP X and a HDV camera.

You can see if it is a bad FW connection by checking the system profiler in the firewire section (Apple Menu > About This Mac > More Info).
That Ninja looks incredibly cool! I wish I had a use for it.
To make it take up less space, switch your Ninja to ProRes LT, you’ll be around 50GB for an hour. You could always transcode back to HDV or XDCam if you really wanted to. But I would just stick with ProRes LT.

The way the actual project files are stored in FCP X is indeed a big problem. I’ve done many more tests and looked at the SQLLite files (that is what FCP X project and events are stored in) and frankly it is very inefficient and redundant. It almost looks like there is debugging code in there.
The Project files store much more information than the FCPXML files, hence the larger sizes, but it’s not THAT much more information that — there is some extra bloat in there too.
The underlying technology of CoreData is a good one, and built upon some really cool things like unlimited undo and constantly saving, but it is just not optimized in FCP X at the moment.
I believe Apple is going to get this fixed–well they have to–it is completely foundational to everything in FCP X. It effects timeline edits, compound clips, keyword ranges and markers — which is what FCP X is.
My current advice is to collapse large compound clips (by using break apart), and not storing complex sequences in events as compound clips.

I’ve experienced some of the same issues with SmoothCam, the stabilization used in FCP X. However, when I examine the unstabalized footage I realize that I did have some drastic moves that are only a frame or two because of my shaky handheldness. SmoothCam just doesn’t do well with certain shots.
Lock and Load is coming for FCP X, but just not released yet, so perhaps it will come out in beta the next few days.
However, since you have Lock and Load, I would suggest you fix your footage there and then bring it into FCP X. You could also consider using Mocha or After Effects to stabilize if you have it.

If you really want to bring your timeline into FCP 7 (I don’t think you need to), you can use X27 ($50 ish) or if you just need a few shots you can use the Free Automatic Duck as describe here:

I’ve captured a lot of HDV from FCP X and it is far superior to FCP 7 and earlier in that regard.
Also if for some reason you want to install a previous version of Mac OS X, you can simply create a new partition in Disk Utilities and install and older OS on that. No need to wipe your drive!

I just tried this on a similar project started in 10.0.1. It didn’t have this problem either.

Seriously, no hickups or spinning beach balls? Have you actually opened FCP X since you transitioned to Lion?
Just kidding of course. 😉
I’m in the middle of a spinning beach ball after dragging some footage into a project, ence I am writing this post, but I am still on now Snow Leopard. I wonder if other folks are having good results with Lion.
