Start the Powerbook up off of the OS X installer disk. If it doesn’t hang, then its a software problem as you guessed. While started off of the installer disk, open Disk Utility, from the pull down menus, and repair the startup drive and the permissions, then reboot.
Next run Apple Software Update and install all the latest versions of the OS and applications. When finished repair the permissions again and restart to see if it hangs. Hopefully, all will be working as it should. If not, post again and we’ll give you some other solutions to try.
Tiger is an awesome OS and should work great with the 17″ Powerbooks.

I would check to see if there is an updater for your switch/router/modem available. The manufacturer should have it on their website if there is one. Let us know if you’re still having problems.

The first thing to try is to open your Network system preferences and click on the button at the bottom that says assist me. Then Click on the the Diagnostics button and proceed from there. The Network Diagnostic tool is very helpful for solving network/internet connection issues.

Chuck is correct. Spyware is not your problem. Repair your permissions, as Jeff recommends, repair your drive using Disk Utility (or Disk Warrior – better), and try using an application with cache cleaning capabilities, like one of these:

Additionally, you might try disconnecting your network cable and see if the problem goes away. I suggest updating your software, drivers, 3rd party hardware’s firmware, etc to the latest versions.

Power cycle your Io as well (turn it off and back on). I would also trash your FCP prefs and caches.

Many of the manufacturers had firmware updates for their Firewire drives to resolve issues like you speak of. Fantom does not seem to have not kept their website up-to-date (bad sign), but maybe this will help you: https://www.micronet.com/support/fw_panther_comp.asp

I think I understand. Yes, it should work fine (I can’t remember any limitations to the older OS X that would be a problem off the top of my head). However, why not just uplink directly from your switch to your cable modem (you switch should have an uplink port for that)? That way your whole network has access to the Internet and you don’t have to buy another card. You can turn-on you Mac’s built-in Firewall if additional security is an issue.

Try repairing the permissions on your startup drive using Disk Utility.

Select “Other” from one of the “Search For” pop ups, then select Spotlight Comments from the window that comes up.

No, I don’t think so. Not unless something has changed in a recent update that I’m unaware of.
