I’m not a fan of Diver Savers either because of some of the reasons mentioned by Steve. But if the info is critical, and cost is worth it to you, then they are probably the best at recovery.
OS X does write over your files as they are erased. It is the reason why i don’t think you’ll have much, if any, luck recovering your files. Its not impossible, but very unlikely. Much harder than the previous Mac OS’s.

I would start by simply repairing your permissions. You didn’t tell us what OS you’re using, but these links should give you a solution:

Sometimes, its easier to just do an “Archive and Install” from the OS X installer disks. If the quick fixes don’t work or there are still other problems I would consider it. Be sure to choose the option to save your applications and home folder files (I don’t remember the wording). You could also try starting up off a different drive.

Very slim chance you’ll get anything back. If its absolutely critical info, contact Drive Savers https://www.drivesavers.com/. They’ll charge you a small fortune, but its your best hope. Most of us learned a long time ago, to backup often. If nothing else, it’ll motivate the powers that be to spend the $$’s for a good back system.

You could say all of OS X is a front end for Unix commands. If like UNIX go that route, but for many of us, CCC is more familiar and friendly way to go. By the time you read how to do it with UNIX, you could have done it with CCC, with no instructions, and you won’t have to remember how you did it, for next time. Either way, do what makes sense to you.

Hey Martin,
I don’t understand what you are trying to do, or what the problems is? Anyone can access your “Drop Box” but the rest of your Mac is relatively safe. Also, its a little hard to give any kind of specific advice without knowing which Mac models, and what OS’s you are running you are having problems with.

Go to https://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/ and get the latest update. Then try again. Also, if nothing else, you can do an archive and install of OS X. Choose the options to save your files and applications.
