Hi Mike,
It’s very important that you repair your startup drive and the permissions before (and after) any software updates (especially OS updates). You can try starting up off of your OS X installer disk and running Disk Utility to repair the drive and the permissions. This could fix your problem. If it doesn’t, or if you want to be safe, I’d choose to do an Archive and Install while started up off the Installer Disk. Be sure to select the options to save your files and applications (I forgot the exact wording). Once the old system is reinstalled. You’ll want to repair the permissions & drive again before running the Apple Software update to get to the current OS version. When it finishes updating, you’ll need to repair the permissions and drive one last time. If for some reason the update fails again, then I’d start looking at things like 3rd party memory (remove it and try again).

Also, try repairing your permissions using Disk Utility and then see if the “Locked” message goes away when you try to delete the above files. You need to be an Admin user to delete them as well.

P.S. You may want to leave it installed. I hate it too, but occasionally you’ll want/need to view wmv files.

It will allow your PC to read/write Mac formatted disks. It is easy to use and works. Don’t waste your time trying to find another workaround or a free solution. I’d probably just format you drive Mac OS Extended (not journaled) in this case.

Try clicking on the desktop before switching applications. This should release the Io so it can be used by the new application.

If you’re going to use it for FCP I suggest you look at getting a FireWire 800 card (or SATA) and a fast/large external drive/RAID for all your media/video. A multi-button mouse and some headphones would also be recommended. Enjoy your new Mac!

You can try re-seating the video card to see if that helps. Also, try the problem monitor (Cinema Display 17″) on another Mac to see if the other Mac has the same problem with it. Other than that, you go to Apple support site to search the knowledge base and discussion forums to see if you can find a solution or similar issue reported/discussed. Most likely, you’ll need to give Apple a call let them know what you found out and get their solution directly. At least we/you narrowed it down.

Try starting up after each of the following (only do what you feel comfortable with)
Verify the power outlet is good – try a different one on a different circuit and make sure nothing else is plugged in (the power coming from your outlet could be wrong/bad and you may want to have an electrician check it out)
Replace the power cord
Make sure the voltage switch on the back of the power supply is set to the correct voltage
Disconnect any external devices (monitor, keyboard, mouse, firewire drives, scanner, printer, etc)
Remove internal cards
Disconnect internal hard drive/s (it won’t completely startup, but will get far enough to see if the HD was the problem)
Take if back to an Apple authorized repair shop ( you may have a bad power supply or logic board. Getting two bad ones in a row is extremely unlikely though, I’ve never had one and I’ve bought a lot of Mac’s. I would suspect your homes power if that is the case).

They are both Apple authorized and they both do “Build to Order” Mac’s (the same as Apple.com) which is very rare. More than likey they are both out of state for you and so that means no tax. Shipping charges apply, but are usually much less than sales tax. I’ve bought several custom Mac’s from both of them and had no problems at all. Powermax sometimes with throw in some extras or give an unofficial discount (smalldog, is unlikely to do the same).
Of course Apple.com is an excellent suggestion as well, if you don’t mind paying the sales tax. I don’t see any advantage of buying from MacMall, MacZone, etc unless they have a return or something they are selling cheap (those usually sell in minutes and are a risk coming from them, in my opinion and experience).
Jeff’s advice about the memory/RAM should be followed. If you need printers, scanners, Firewire drives, or other devices, I’d shop around and not buy them from Apple in most cases (you’ll save money).
I have no advice on extended warranties for you. Jeff’s recommendations seem good. I personally never get Apple care or any extended warranty on anything I buy. I’ve been lucky, I guess, to not have problems, but it feels too much like a scam for me to ever support extended warranties. With all the TV’s, refrigerators, stereo equipment, washing machines, lawnmowers, microwaves, etc, etc, etc, I’d be broke if I bought extended warranties on everything. The money I save by not ever buying the warranties, would easily pay for any repair or replacement if anyone did fail after their short free warranty. This is definitely not the way to go for everyone, especially new users, but it works for me. If I had to buy an extended warranty for one thing, it would be my PowerBook. Do what you feel comfortable with.
