I agree, just capture everything (dv, beta) to 8-bit uncompressed. Use component i/o if your deck supports it. If not, you may want to capture the dv though Firewire (not S video) to 8-bit uncompressed. in most cases 10-bit is not necessary when capturing from the sources you mentioned. 10-bit will only take up more space on drives and limit your real time performance.

With OS X most people never need to defrag the hard drive. However, if you really want to do it, the best method is to simply copy everything off the drive, erase it, and copy every thing back on to it. This is a much safer and usually faster method than trying to use some defrag application.

Try using a “_” or a “-” instead of a “.” between the numbers.

You need to change to the view you want and then close the window. The next time you open it, it should default to whatever view it was in when it was when last closed. A weird system, but I think this might help you.

P.S. the Widgets in your ~/Library/widgets and /Library/widgets folders are Package’s. That means if you right click (control click if you’re living in the 80’s) and choose “Open Package Contents.” Inside you’ll find additional files, images and preferences to control your widgets.

Your Stickies Widget data is in the file ~/Library/Preferences/widget-com.apple.widget.stickies.plist. If for some reason the info doesn’t appear in your Stickies widget after replacing the prefs file with the original, you can open the prefs file in a text editor and retrieve the important info that way.
It’s a good idea to do regular backups of all your important files, settings, passwords, etc. If you have .Mac or a second hard drive and an application like Carbon Copy Cloner its pretty easy.

Yep, I run Kona cards with Io’s on the same machines and they work wonderfully together in my experience. AJA does support this setup.

Bob’s comment about having problems with the 1.8ghz Mac’s is similar to what I’ve remember reading others have complaining about. It seems like the buss speed in those Mac’s is slower, or somehow restricted, causing problems with some hardware/pci cards. If possible try using a different Mac and see if your problems go away. You can always sell your 1.8 and buy a used 2.0 ghz Mac (or better) for relatively little cost. Other than that, I’m not sure what your problems might be. If you get any more info about your problem, or solution, please pass it along to us. Also, I know you spoke to AJA, but its not a bad idea to contact them again with whatever additional details you can supply to see if they have any similar experiences or possible solutions. Contacting the SATA card manufacturer might be even a better place to start as this problem appears to not caused in anyway by the Io itself.
