Personally, I would say to go with the full frame size (using Prores) for the edit, and use compressor to create your DVD files for dvdsp after its all done.

OP, the reason for the clean install / freshly wiped drive method is to start fresh. What Michael was getting at is that here on the Cow, every post about GUIs issue is that upgrading FCP (legacy) apps by doing it over an existing install of a previous version almost always causes the issues you describe. That’s why he said that I’d you’d searched these forums you prior, most likely, wouldn’t have done it that way. 96% of the time, that type of upgrade causes major issues. Most pros wipe thier drive once a year just to keep things tight and working right anyways.
I suggest you try doing your system drive to an external (use Super Duper or CCC) so you have it just in case, wipe your system drive (format it!), and start re-installing everything from scratch…starting with the OS. It’ll work like a dream and you’ll be elated! With everything you’ve already done, you could’ve already done it 😉

Is it possible that the easy setup is such that that is the ny way to capture? The way I capture from HDV to ProRes looks just as you describe.

That was a great tip! I had a project that I didn’t create and needed to change the framerate without having to re-create the whole project…this worked perfectly! I did have to change a couple of properties, such as the font size, but other than that, it was perfect.

Yup….and using USB Thumb Drives will help negate possible data corruption since they have no moving parts.

Export from AE as animation with transparency. I’m just learning AE myself. If you’ve got FCP 7 on your system you’ve got, one of the ProRes codecs (ProRes 444?) carries transparency as well.
