I think the OConnor model John meant to say was the 2475. The cadillac of film style fluid heads.
If you plan on doing mainly ENG style shooting buy the V20 and rent when you need a Video 30.

Forget the tiffen black promist try the Tiffen soft effect filters. Available in standard, warm (with 812 warming filter combined) or gold.
My favorite tiffen filters for softening skin tone.
Work wonders on female talent.

The bvw 75 betacam series deck had the capability to turn of the TBC which was primarily used to remove the image roll down when recording a non genlocked signal.

Tommy,
The problems you mention may be related to the specific dvcpro model vtr you are using. You need to check the vtr manual to confirm if it can perform insert and assemble editing via RS422. Some dvcpro decks both the SD and HD versions only offer full editing modes via firewire not RS-422.
Some models cannot do assemble or insert editing which is why these modes are greyed out in FCP.
Yes this does suck when you compare a low end UVW-1800 machine can do simple assemble editing.

David,
IF you want to maintain the HD dub (assuming it is another 720P copy you want to make)
you should dub across via firewire instead of HDSDI and avoid another generation of compression. If you are making a 720 copy I believe you may lose the frame flags during the dub.In your case both the HDSDI and firewire downconverted outputs are active.
You will need to set the proper firewire menu for the downconvert to 4:1:1 to occur as well as setting the HDSDI output.

The SDX is more forgiving than the dvx-100 but the operations and feel are quite different from an operator’s perspective.
Unless you need to fit the camera on the front dashboard of a car the size of the SDX is not an issue especially for handheld ENG work.
Handheld operation is easier in my opinion on a professional camera with a real viewfinder than using the dvx.
FYI the SDX like any other 2/3″ professional camcorder are used daily on shows ranging from documentaries to crash and burn reality tv.
Your requirements listed are nothing special that the SDX in the hands of a qualified experienced crew could not handle blindfolded. Just keep in mind it is not a toy so treat it with respect.

November 2, 2005 at 4:35 pm in reply to: has anyone tried to use a portable dvd player as a monitorThe portable dvd player with LCD screens which I have seen are more than the cost of a used 8″ JVC TM-91 or Sony 8042 monitor.
Consider buying a used CRT instead.

Luke,
What frame rates did you see any variation occur at?
For example did you see a difference in footage shot at 24P versus 60P?
Powering up and down the camera might cause a slight difference given when and where the cycle of a frame starts compared to where it was before the power down cycle.

Jeff,
The issue of audio delay has been with us for quite longer than we know.
Even standard def betacam CCD camcorders had the problem. The reason we did not see it as much as we would in high def is the lower resolution in standard def “masked” the issue to some extent.FYI Sony’s F900 is one frame out of sync in terms of audio to video.
A common technique in the field for me is to use a Rane audio delay to compensate during the original audio recording in the field. However this is not so easy when doing simple ENG crash and burn style shooting.
The use of digital audio delays are quite common on multicamera truck operations.
