What size Head &Tripod for Varicam?
Posted by Skip Brand on November 5, 2005 at 4:24 pmCan anyone recommend which Sachtler tripod/head combination is best suited for the Varicam? The Sachtler 100mm bowl system is the Video 20Plus (7.7 lbs.) on 100mm bowl Heavy Duty Carbon Fiber legs….or the 150mm bowl Video 25 (9.5 lbs.) on a 150mm bowl Heavy Duty Carbon Fiber legs. On a camera system that will have multiple users, I am debating these two systems. Any thoughts?

This is a fair question, because at once the Varicam serves to replace a conventional beta camcorder and also it replaces a full dressed 16mm film camera. These two different sets of users would naturally require two different tripods – probably the very two that you mention; the largest 100mm Sachtler (like a V18 or V20) and the smallest 150mm Sachtler (like the V25). I have both, and I can tell you catagoricly that “bigger is better” unless you have to carry it around all day!
The ultimate decision most likely will come down to price and actual use; if you intend to do ENG with your Varicam (no film-style accessories) you’ll pick the V18/V20 but if you will be dressing your camera up with marr/box and rails, on-board 8.4″ LCD monitor, follow focus, etc. you must get the bigger sticks.
Remember also that the legs are a critical element here. the more heavy duty the better, to minimize twist and flex. Fortunately the carbon fiber offerings combine both strength and light weight (of course at the expense of coin!).
As far as brands are concerned, I agree that Sachtler is probably the best; although they are owned by the same company that owns Vinten and O’Conner as well. although it must be said that in Hollywood, amongst the “film-folks” the large O’Conner (2016?) is often asked for, and probably worth a shoot-out with the V25 before you spend $10000!

November 6, 2005 at 5:00 pmI think the OConnor model John meant to say was the 2475. The cadillac of film style fluid heads.
If you plan on doing mainly ENG style shooting buy the V20 and rent when you need a Video 30.

November 6, 2005 at 6:55 pmOn my Chapman dolly, I use the O’Connor 2575, superbly steady and smooth.
On the sticks or jib arm, I use the Vinton 250, almost as capable as the 2575 and a lot lighter. I really like the built-in illuminated bubble level as well. The head is a bit heavy for tripod use, but with light-weight carbon fiber legs, it makes a nice package.
I’ve tried smaller heads in the past with unsatisfactory results.
Sachtler doesn’t seem to offer enough drag for my tastes, but those who like a “looser” feel seem to prefer it. NAB is a great place to try many heads and choose the one that feels right for you.
Good shooting!

November 7, 2005 at 6:39 pmFor light wieght ENG style, the O’conner 1030b is much nicer than the Sachtler 20. The Sachtler 18 is too light for good camera work.
Solid legs a must. The heavier Carbon fiber Sachtler sticks might be the ticket, along with the 1030b head to bridge the gap between heavy VS light.
good luck, Erich Roland
