It always seems the issue of setup in a digital versus analog workflow creates some misunderstanding.
So to keep it simple Setup is only required in an analog environment (ie outputting to betacam sp, vhs, viewing on a analog monitor etc).
Since you are mixing and matching post production flows SDI and component analog I would recommend adding setup via the vtr when needed and recording in camera at the 0 setting so all your field masters can be digitized either in SDI without setup or into a analog setup with setup added.
Your video controller may find it easier to set the camera in 7.5A mode so he can view the NTSC output with setup added which may be the method he or she is more familar with shading cameras. This also makes it easier to light for the shadow areas.
I had a recent job with six sdx 900’s where I did ISO on board recordings as well as a composite line cut. The camera were set to 7.5A mode (on board SDI recording with no setup but NTSC output for feeding video control as well as director’s monitor’s had setup added. The trick was setting the dvcpro studio vtr set to remove setup during input. Such a method allowed for maintaining no setup for the ISO and line cut thereby avoiding major confusion later during digitizing.

Your engineer is correct so take his advice and don’t second guess him or her.
The 7.5A NTSC output setting on the SDX-900 allow adding setup to the composite output only while leaving the digital recording without setup.
This feature goes back to an original request by NBC to add the feature to their Panasonic camcorders.
The feature is quite useful for monitoring the NTSC output in an environment where setup will be required for eventual analog release.
Unless you are familar of viewing images without setup you may have problems lighting for scenes in which the black level is much lower than what you were expecting.
Just keep in mind that when using the 7.5A camera setting it will not effect your digital recording it only deals with the NTSC viewing output.
The two other camera settings are 0 and 7.5. 0 will record no setup on tape and output no setup via the video outputs. The 7.5 setting will record setup on tape and output setup.
The 7.5 camera setting is not recommended is you intend on capturing digitally and maintaining a digital post production route.
If you use it by mistake during playback on a studio vtr you can remove setup via the remove setup vtr menu.

Please don’t take this personally but do you expect everytime you see a gasoline ad that the cars filling up are included with each $3.00 tank of gas you purchase?
You have to use some common business sense to read between the lines and understand what the manufacturer is really implying.
Based on my experience with AJA they did not nor would have intentionally mislead their customers unlike what other companies make a habit of doing.
One item the ad did not mention is the aftermarket technical support a client receives for FREE from AJA. The support alone is worth the price of the K2 and all the Apple software combined.
I personally wonder if not listing the superior aftermarket technical support can be considered misleading. Afterall if a company forgets to list one of the greatest strengths with employees such as Rudy, Clark and the rest of the staff at AJA then I do not want to deal with them at all.
Therefore I am offically requesting an immediate correction on all AJA ad’s as I have been mislead, cheated and taken advantage of because I cannot receive the same level of abuse that Sony, Apple, Avid and many other companies consider status quo.

Stick with what best works today for you. The latest PCI-X G5 has already been road tested and have a proven track record I can’t say the same for the soon to be released PCI-e models.
Do you want to be Apple’s R&D testbench for a few months before the next generation of G5 is released?
Given the fact that the quad machine will be around for no more than a year before the Intel versions are released why would anyone buy it knowing that their pci-e cards may become obsolete? Ask yourself can you recover the cost of upgrading the entire system within a year to justify being on the bleeding edge every year?
My choice would be to buy the last generation PCI-X G5 at prices which will go down, then use and abuse it thereby maximizing your investment and then dump it when the Intel machines are released.
Always look at your ROI (return on investment) before jumping into the latest greatest digital mess Apple has decided to unleash on the world.

Based on my experience dealing with the politics involved in Mexico my recommendation is DO NOT TAKE ANY OF YOUR OWN GEAR.
The bribes (I mean fees) involved will cost you a small fortune if you do not obtain offical written permission from the nearest Mexican Consultate in the US and the city you are working in Mexico.
Normally a carnet would be the proper paperwork but the last time I had the misfortune to work in Mexico they did not recognize a Carnet. A carnet is the equivalent of a “equipment passport”.
If the gear is professional gear and you have alot to transport I recommend renting it at the location instead of dealing with having your gear seized and held for “ransom” because you did not have the proper paperwork or are willing to pay the bribes (I mean offical fees).

The same level of abuse you can expect from Avid is available for free from Sony.
Just try dealing with the service depot staff ( I am not referring to the engineers).Apple charges for support after the initial 90 days for FCP and based on my dealing with them their newbie staff help I consider their help worthless considering the lack of experience when dealing with interfacing issues between non apple products (which they advertise on their website) and their hardware and software.

I believe the real answer lies with Panasonic marketing which will answer the solution is to buy the 170 studio editing deck.
Maybe Sony realized early on that even a low cost UVW-1800 would require the capability of doing a simple assemble record. Why Panasonic cannot is a mystery.

Please don’t tell me you are using a single internal hard drive to capture your footage.
You don’t need to take any poison just a dose of FCP, G5 hardware and hard drive spec’s knowledge.
