February 11, 2010 at 6:03 pm in reply to: Problem with large project size

Thanks for the response, Shane. The problem is, FCP won’t load the second project (usually). I first tried opening a second, earlier version of the project, so I could copy clips from one to the other – FCP crashed (twice). I assumed this was because both projects were so large (300 megs each). So then I made a copy of the project (saved as with a new name), and took out everything except the edits. This got me down to about 100 megs. I loaded the original project again, this time renaming it and taking out everything except the 300 files of original logged clips – this came out to about 110 megs. So now (after restarting the computer to empty RAM) I loaded the edits only project, and then tried to open the project with the logged clips – it started to load the second project, and didn’t crash, but slowed WAY down. I finally cancelled it when after 12 minutes it had only read 22% of the project. (The whole 300 meg project takes about 7 minutes to load). I did try loading the clips only project first, which took about 6 minutes, and then adding the edits only project – this went fairly fast (2 min) and loaded ok. But normally I would only open and work on the edits only project, and add the other condensed versions (clips, assemblies, etc) later if and when needed. My experiences so far don’t give me a lot of confidence that this would work. So for the moment I’m back to editing on the single large original project.

Any further advice or suggestions? (I will get your DVD to check out, but I have the feeling it won’t answer this problem). Thanks again.

I use Timeslice, which I find very useful and easy to use.

September 15, 2008 at 9:51 pm in reply to: Tried the new AJA software upgrade?

Here is a repost of what I wrote on the AJA forum:

Just a quick note of warning that I had all kinds of problems after I upgraded to IOHD Driver Version 6.0. Running FCP 6.0.3 on an Intell 8 processor with OSX 10.5.2. Don’t know if this is specific to my setup or if it’s a more general problem. The new driver version did fine playing back my FCP timeline, but wouldn’t accept any video from Log and Capture. I had a long (90 miinute) very helpful phone call with AJA tech support (they always impress me), but despite numerous strategies we weren’t able to figure out the problem. Among other things that happened, as soon as I opened the Log and Capture window, the IO frame buffer would switch from 29.97 (which everything in FCP was set to) to 23.98. I finally did an uninstall of Driver 6 and went back to Driver ver 5.1.2 – and now everything is working fine again.

    Eric –

I have this exact same problem, on both of my systems (FCP 6.0 on G5 dual 2 Gig OSX 10.4.9, and FCP 6.0.2 on Macbook Pro OSX 10.4.11). Strange thing is, when I updated to 6.0.2 on the laptop, the next two bins of clips Reconnected correctly, but all subsequent bins no longer do (absolutely no change to system between bins 2 and later). Sure hoping I can solve this, since I’ll have thousands of clips that I need to reconnect.

    Eric –

I’m having this problem, and it’s driving me crazy. I think I was probably the one that posted the note Shane answered. I’d assumed his reply (that it was broken on 6.0 and 6.1, but fixed in 6.2)was correct and went on to other chores, but when I finally got around to upgrading to 6.2 I discovered (as you did) that it was still a problem. This is a major problem for me – I’ve got thousands of files I need to reestablish the links for, and one at a time just doesn’t do it. (Funny thing is: when I first upgraded, the first two bins I tried worked fine. But since then (no changes made, just went on to the next bin) none of the other files in my other bins work other than one at a time. And I’ve got something like 16,000 files I will need to reconnect!)

The component output of the JVC HD100 in HDV mode is 720p30 (or 24 if set that way). The newest JVC’s can record in 720p60, but not the HD100.

I called AJA Tech Support and talked to Jerry, who said there shouldn’t be any problem – I just select the 720p 23.98 Easy Setup and then modify the presets for 29.98.

    Jeremy,

Thanks for the response. For the time being I would be going from the component outputs of the camera (don’t have a deck yet).

April 27, 2007 at 7:09 pm in reply to: Audio level

A tip I got from Philip Hodgetts is to put a copy of the audio track(s) on the timeline in sync with the original track – this will inclrease the audio level.

March 28, 2007 at 9:56 pm in reply to: Mastering directly to Pioneer PRV-LX1 DVD recorder?

I record to my LX1 from FCP a lot, but I always do it manually. I just park the CTI of the FCP timeline on black a frame before the program begins, start the LX1, and as soon as I see the LX1 timecode numbers begin I hit the FCP play. If it’s a one-off or if I just don’t have time, I’ll record directly to DVD and enter chapter marks manually from the LX1 (of course both my machines are in the same room). Otherwise I’ll record to the LX1 harddrive and add chapter markers or make edits or combine different segments there before transferring to the DVDs.
