    Bret and Tom,

That was it. So obvious that I completely missed it – and feel rather much the fool. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the various suggestions. I hadn’t realized the Find function in the Browser was so flexible – that may solve my problem right there. I’ve also downloaded the trial version of CatDV Pro and will try that out. Thanks again.

As I’m logging the clips I do put them into individual bins – one for each camera roll (usually between 30 and 50 clips). However, to do a search through all my footage, I think I will need to create an additional bin and put copies of all the clips into that one bin. Otherwise, clicking on a column will only organize the clips within the currently selected bin, as I understand it.

If this isn’t going to work in FCP, does anyone have a suggestion as to which database program would work best for this. The FCP Browser is convenient for entering info since I can just I and O the In and Out timecodes as I’m logging and don’t have to manually enter them – not to mention that I’d have to reenter all the information into a separate program.

    Thanks again for any suggestions.

  • While AE and other programs are probably better for this ideally, part of the question besides cost is the learning curve involved in new programs. If you feel fairly comfortable with Motion, I would suggest trying a test on a sample picture and see if it works for you. You can definitely do “motion control” (I assume by this you mean still frame moves, the “Ken Burns effect”) in Motion. You won’t be able to get much precise control, however, unless you use keyframes within Motion. I recently did a half-hour documentary with a number of still frame moves, and Motion worked fine for this (once I finally got the hang of remembering to set a new keyframe BEFORE adjusting the parameters, and realizing the interpolation paths affected the inpoint of the NEXT keyframe).

Thank you for the review, Jim. A big question I have is how the quality compares to other cameras that I know (much more helpful to me than technical data). For example, shooting in various conditions, what would the Z1U footage look like compared to the same images shot with a PD170, and especially a higher end DVCAM camera like the DSR 570? How about the ZIU footage shot HDV but then downconverted to DV, put side by side in the same timeline with DSR500 footage – how might they compare? Would we be getting closer to DSR500 quality, equal to, superior to? I am thinking of shooting a long documentary next year and love the portability of my PD 150, but love the better quality of my DSR 500 footage – might the Z1U be a solution here? Thanks for any thoughts.
