Jona- FCP 7 limits you to 4GB of RAM, whereas PP 6 (and FCP 10.7) doesn’t – so theoretically you have more RAM available and are less likely to crash. I did however at one point specifically ask someone at Adobe if this meant I wouldn’t have problems in PP with such a large project, and he wouldn’t commit to an answer. Also, if you are working with multiple formats PP supposedly handles that better also (just what I have read – I’m not using it (yet) myself). My large projects were all in a single format (HDV on the previous one, Pro Res 422 on the current one). One difference is that you can have multiple projects open at the same time in FCP 7, but only a single one at a time in PP (though as I understand it, it is relatively simple to open one project, copy something, close it and them open the main project and copy that in). My plan at the moment is to stick with FCP 7 until (and if) it gets too problematic and then at that point make the decision to either stick with FCP 7 in multiple smaller projects, or transfer over to PP 6 or FCP 10.7 (I think PP because I’m guessing the learning curve would be easier than starting from scratch with the different editing model of FCP 10.)

I’m working on a very large project also – about 9 TB of footage (so far). Currently my project is 110 MB – but I’m still in the early stages! The advice I’ve always gotten has been similar to what Dave suggests – breaking the project into smaller ones. It does make it slightly more inconvenient if your project isn’t segmented into distinct sections, since to access clips or sequences you have to open up a new project every so often (and then close old ones so you don’t have too many open at the same time). I’d hoped FCP 8 would solve the problem – alas. That being said, however, you might want to keep working on your single project until you start having crash problems, and then split up at that point. I’ve often worked with projects much larger than what others recommend. My last one topped out at about 250 MB, and I didn’t really have too many problems until I got over 200 MB (obviously YMMV depending on computer set up, project specifics, etc). Good luck.

I’ve wondered about this recently as well. What I’ve done (I’m usually editing ProRes 422 timelines) is used Compressor to send 2 files: one with the Custom>Cram>Apple Trailer>Native> 1080p Stereo setting, and a second one with the Custom>Cram>Vimeo>Vimeo HD>720p16:9 setting. The first one seems to be good quality (for the web) and is about 7% the size of the Pro Res 422 file. I haven’t tried the iPad setting – maybe I’ll do a test and see how that compares. The second file is less than half the size of the first one, but still seems to be a decent quality. Then when I send those, I also mention that I have the higher quality Pro Res files and could send those if needed (though usually too large to send with the normal Dropbox or YouSendIt methods). But not knowing how the files are to be used, I even wonder if I should be sending a still lower quality version in case they need fast uploads/downloads etc. If I ask what size they want, I often get either no response or just a “Whaaa?”
Any words of wisdom?

A good an important reminder – Thanks. In my case, I was uploading and wanting to share something I had created.

I had a problem recently where I posted something on Dropbox but my contact wasn’t able to download it – it opened and played fine, but couldn’t be downloaded. Dropbox support suggested I add ” ?dl=1 ” (without the quotes), and that solved the problem. Apparently that told Safari to download the video rather than simple play it. So you could try adding ?dl=1 to the end of the address and see if that works.

Thanks for the response, Shane. I had initially done just that, creating a Pro Res sequence and just pasting in the footage. The problem is, if I then decide to change one of those clips, say shorten it and then change my mind and lengthen it back, I then need to rerender all the part that I bring back – quite a drag at the begging of a long editing process. I think I’m better off doing a regular transcode to Pro Res. But thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks for the response, David. Where is “Other Workflows” ? – I can’t seem to find it anywhere (Compressor 3.5.3). I tend to think the easiest thing for me to do is simply select all my EX files and then do a batch Recompress in Compressor (after testing first as you suggest). Someone recommended that before I do this, I should go into the files in the FCP browser and create a reel name for each of the clips (perhaps based on original cards, or maybe dates).
Thanks again for your help.

Thanks for the replies. Kool pointed out the problem – I was following the directions TOO meticulously, including the direction to double click the downloaded file to extract it and to load the extracted file onto the SDHC card. Well, the file is self extracting. The downloaded file is called GH2_V11.bin – this is the one that needs to be copied to the SDHC file, as Kool mentioned. When I double clicked that file (as per directions), I got a file called GH2_V11.bin.cpgz – which is the file I tried to use to upgrade and which didn’t work. Funny thing is, when I talked to Panasonic Tech Support I kept mentioning “you sure I should be copying this file called GH2_V11.bin.cpgz”, and he kept saying yes.
Any way, problem solved. Thanks again for your help.

I found the answer from someone on the Adobe Elements Forum – I had to trash the Media Database file (in Library>Application Support>etc) and force PS Elements to recreate it. Then all worked again.

Thank you Michael for the response, and the link to Shane’s tutorial (I had searched on the web and didn’t find anything – next time I’ll search within Creative Cow). I had in fact transferred over the complete card structure – the problem was that I then changed the name of the folder (adding a 1, to differentiate from other CF card copies). When I deleted that little “1” in the folder name, it then imported into Log and Transfer without problem. Thanks again for your help (and thanks to Shane!).
