  • importing ftg from CF card stored on harddrive

I shot some 108024p HDV footage on a Z7’s CF card. I backed up the card on my harddrive. If I import the footage from the Sony MRU (used as a card reader) into FCP 6 using the Log and Transfer window everything works out fine (though it’s a bit frustrating having to wait without any twirling gear to let you know something is actually happening). But if I try to import from the same files once they’re transferred from the CF card to my harddrive, the Log and Transfer window tells me that the “video contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure”. The CF card contained both .IDX index files and .M2T MPEG files for each shot. I will be reusing my card, so need to be able to import the footage as stored on the harddrive. I doesn’t show up as available if I simply try to import from FCP. The only way I’ve been able to import the clips is by using MPEG Streamclip to convert each shot to a .MOV file. This takes quite a while, plus doubles the space on the harddrive for the shots. Is there a way to import the shots from the Log and Transfer window, or is there some other method that would be better than Streamclip?

    Thanks for any suggestions.

Backing up the card means more than dragging the video folder to another drive. You must copy the entire card structure into a separate folder for each card. L&T needs all on the card to work. Watch Shane’s excellent tutorial.

Thank you Michael for the response, and the link to Shane’s tutorial (I had searched on the web and didn’t find anything – next time I’ll search within Creative Cow). I had in fact transferred over the complete card structure – the problem was that I then changed the name of the folder (adding a 1, to differentiate from other CF card copies). When I deleted that little “1” in the folder name, it then imported into Log and Transfer without problem. Thanks again for your help (and thanks to Shane!).
