To me, it looks like nothing more than a simple scale effect. Just keyframe the video a little larger and then keyframe it back to it’s original size…or am I missing something. It is early yet. 🙂

  • Or, perhaps, you drive is formatted for Mac and the media files cannot be accessed by the PC?

December 12, 2008 at 3:17 am in reply to: 40 IRE of Color burst…..

If you look on a Waveform monitor, the Color Burst signal should measure 40 ire units from top to bottom. I usually put the bottom of the burst signal on the 0% line and then make sure that the top is at +40 ire on the scope. Make sense?
It’s the same with the sync signal. It should extend from the 0% line and then down to -40 ire again on the waveform monitor.
The horizontal blanking is the area that extends from a line of active video and includes the front porch, the blanking pulse, the breezeway, the color burst pulse and the back porch. Really, I’m not making this up!
As for the 2-field requirement, I’m not sure about that one. Possible it might have to do with having your record machine set to a 2-field reference rather than locked to a 4-field sequence. Just a guess on this one.
    Google “Tektronix” or go to:

    https://www.tek.com/Measurement/App_Notes/NTSC_Video_Msmt/glossary.html

for a good diagram of the horizontal blanking standards.
Man, I haven’t used this stuff for years! I’m surprised that I still remember it all. And they said I’d never have to use this stuff.

I’ve has the same problem when monitoring audio out of the RCA jacks. It was suggested to me to restart the Mac while resetting the P-RAM (Cmd-Opt-P-R keys) It normally worked but the problem did come back eventually. AJA just replaced the card a few weeks ago and so far, so good.

  • A few years ago I made a slate for a Christmas spot that had a series of colored stripes over a black background. When viewed on a vectorscope, the dots formed an outline of a Christmas tree on the scope. I actually made a Christmas card out of it, showing the front of the Tek scope with the display. I sent to all of my video friends.

Except when played on a computer screen. The blanking is then clearly visible at the edges of the window.

The lines are called Blanking and will be seen on almost any analog camera recording. They aren’t a defect-they are just part of the signal from that older analog format.

If a plug-in is an FxPlugin I normally put mine in the HD>Library>Plug-ins>FxPlug folder. If I put them into the “normal” plug-ins folder you were referring to, they won’t show up in FCP.

November 17, 2008 at 10:43 pm in reply to: Export QT File WITH Color Bars & Countdown

You will find color bars and the text option under the Generator pull-down menu at the bottom right side of the Viewer window. Just edit the bars & tone right into your timeline, add a slate and a countdown and export the entire sequence in whatever format the station requires. Generally change the tone on the color bars to -20db as well.
Apple was still including an academy leader on the install disks in (I believe) an extras folder on disk one. Not sure of the location, but it’s on there somewhere.

November 14, 2008 at 10:39 pm in reply to: HD XDCam to ProRes422 when importing?

I am still running FCP 5.1.4 on the main machine here at work, but I’m running 6.0.4 on my MacPro at home. (ironic isn’t it that my personal machine can run rings around the one I use on a daily basis here). In the past I’ve just been putting the finished videos back on disk via HDSDI out of the Kona 3, but when we finally upgrade the work machine, I’m looking into putting the finished video back to disk by just transferring the data from one machine to the other.
Although I use ProRes at home, I don’t have that option here at work. I usually capture from the HD XDCam via HDSDI as DVCPro through the Kona 3.
I’m just trying to develop a good workflow for when the upgrade finally happens. I’ve loaded FCS on my laptop and brought it down to work so I can load the XCCam files on it “for evaluation”. My workflow for HD works well that way I do it right now, but I’m looking at the options that the upgrade to FCP6 will offer. Of course by the time they actually get around to doing the upgrade here, FCP 7 will probably be available.
    Thanks for the insights.
