It’s a :30 sec. spot that also has a couple of upconverted legacy shots in it. Since it’s being delivered on tapes to most of the TV stations, I chose to edit in 29.97 from the beginning. The spot will also be delivered electronically to several venues including Time Warner Cable and Charter Cable. They require 29.97 for their formats. It’s easier to just edit at 29.97 and not have to deal with frame rate conversion on the electronic files later. The problem is developing because a few of the stations are going to air it in HD and require a BluRay for their source (!? -I kid you not!)

It’s pretty straightforward on the editing. It started out as Sony HD XDCam footage shot at 23.98P. It was brought into my machine via a Kona 3 as 1080i DVCPro HD at 29.97. Edited the usual way, exported as a self contained Quicktime and run thru Compressor 3. The bit rate is as high as I dare to go while not choking the PS3 on playback. The MPeg file looks good when played back before going to be authored but I loose control of the project at this point when the MPeg files go off to be authored and burned.
WHEN will Apple enable us to do out own BluRay authoring with some decent support.

The discs that our guy is trying to make are ending op looking “jaggy” when played back on a PS3 and into a monitor via HDMI. They swear that the PS3 and the monitor are set up correctly but the results are still aliased badly. The 1080i sequence is exported via Compressor 3 as an HD DVD with the Blu-Ray radio dial ticked. All other parameters are pretty much the default settings. The resulting Mpeg files are then used for the actual burning. I’m not certain what he is using to author the discs but I believe it is Encore. This is a simple put-it-in-and-play disc with no additional authoring. Just close the drawer and hit “play”. We’ve authored discs in the past without any of these problems, but those discs were all After Effects files and did not contain actual video from a location camera.
Any additional thoughts?

I have to comment on David’s post above. Live Type does indeed have the ability to kern letters separately or as a group. Any letter can be adjusted to any degree in relation to the other letters. Simply highlight the letter(s) and using the Cmd “arrow” keys, it can be moved anywhere in relation to the other letters on the baseline. Very “Chyron-like” actually.

I’m converting them using Voltiac right now. They are chugging right along on my MacPro. It will only take about an hour to convert a whole data DVD’s worth of files. This version of Voltiac will allow me to export a number of formats including any in the Quicktime library. Since it’s an industrial training video and it’s SD, I’m just converting all of the HD files to DV50 anamorphic. The quality from this little camera is surprisingly good. I’ll have to look into getting a new “vacation” camera soon.
I did determine that the files were from a Sony consumer HD camera. The disks were provided with only the media files and none of the supporting database or directory info so scratch L&T on this project. I’ll just queue all of the files up and batch convert them overnight.

Christina, I am working on an older Quad G5 running 5.1.4here at work, but I have a MacPro running FCP6.05 at home and also a Macbook Pro running the same version. Both of those are Intel based. I could do the work on my personal machines. How did you get the files converted in the newer machines?

Make sure that your deck is set to “internal” and “Preset” first. Also set the Time Code generator to “Rec. Run”. There are switches under the control panel for this.
Now push the “hold” button on the front panel. The numbers will start flashing. Use the jog/shuttle knob to select the group of numbers you want to change. Now while holding the “search” button down, turn the jog/shuttle knob until you have the desired numbers displayed. Change the other groups in the same manner. When you have the Time Code you want, push the “set” button.
If all you want to do is zero the code, press the “Hold” button then the “Reset” button and finally the “Set”. button.

Is it possible that you are playing the render files in the timeline even though the actual media is off line?
