  • what is the count down at the start of old films called?

Posted by Nick Vandiem on December 2, 2008 at 10:19 am

    Hi all,

As the subject says, I am trying to find examples of preroll countdowns of old 40s,50s, and 60s films where you have the numbers in a circle or something counting backwards with blinks between them 5,4,3,2,1). I’m not entirely sure what it is called so have been unable to find some reference examples.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

    Kind Regards,
    Nick.

    Also sometimes called SMPTE Leader.

When I was a mere prat, I edited the evening film reel at a tv station. I clipped off the leaders from about 300 PSAs and commercials and assembled them into a stream of consciousness film project that included drawing on the individual frames and scratching the emulsion.

Out of the 300 or more leaders on the reel, only a few were actually the same off-the-shelf official Academy package. I was amazed at the variety and creativity various studios and labs had invested in a mere 8 seconds.

Having worked “spot check-in” at a commercial station,
the same still goes for SLATES from
the thousands of post houses around the world.

    Hey

a having made a few of those slates myself, i was always impressed with the ones that had color gardients on the slate that spelled out the name of the post house on the vectorscope

A few years ago I made a slate for a Christmas spot that had a series of colored stripes over a black background. When viewed on a vectorscope, the dots formed an outline of a Christmas tree on the scope. I actually made a Christmas card out of it, showing the front of the Tek scope with the display. I sent to all of my video friends.

You win, Bob, I have never seen that and, man, I’ve set up a million 2″ tapes.
