The producer would like the finished timelines put back onto the original HD XDCam field disks for archiving. Guess it saves him $25. They are simple projects without a lot of effects but with color grading on just about every clip thus the conforming time.
    Go figure.

November 13, 2008 at 4:45 pm in reply to: Motion 3 stilm failing to launch on MBP

I may have found the problem. After looking at the crash log, I noted references to a Noise Industries FX plug just before a Kernel Panic and crash. I went into the FX Plug folder in the Library folder and removed the Noise Industries plug. All seems to be working now. Motion launches OK and is stable. The Motion Templates in FCP are now showing up as is my DVMatte FXplug. Neither were appearing before even though they were loaded and in the correct folders. Could it be this simple?
I’ll post more as I get further into this.

To answer the original question, DV video can be either Drop Frame or Non-Drop Frame. Most consumer level camera default to Drop Frame but professional cameras can record either.

I’ve searched thru the archives and didn’t come up with anything definitive to fix the problem. All other Studio 2 programs launch and seem to run fine. Motion, however, will quit as soon as it begins to launch. I’ve trashed the prefs, repaired permissions, removed all plug-ins and run Disk Warrior on the HD. Still NG
I will reinstall the program tonight. Although I don’t run Motion on the laptop all that much, it would be nice to have. Any other suggestions?

Hmmm…Unless I’m reading this wrong, a simple luminance key should do the trick. Just drag the Lum Key filter onto your graphic track which is placed on the track above your background. Set the controls to key out the darker part of the graphic, adjust the sliders until you get the effect you want.
    Very easy and simple.

November 6, 2008 at 2:39 pm in reply to: Spanish version options

    Hi Chris.
We so training videos for a large company. Each video need to have two versions of the entire video-English and Spanish. For finished products we deliver a full stereo English and Spanish version with closed captioning. We also deliver an English & Spanish version with split tracks-VO and on camera on channel one and all music/NAT/effects on channel two. Although we master to Digital Betacam with 4 channels available, this particular client asks for only two tracks of audio. We do post audio production on each video. After getting approval on the English version and the picture and audio are “locked” we do a transcription of the finished video with a timecode window burn DVD for reference. These materials go off ti the person that does the Spanish translation. He delivers .wav files of each section of the script. These are then edited into a duplicate of the main sequence in the audio studio using Pro Tools. The stereo/split track mixes are then layed back to the video which is then used to master the DVD’s.
As the videos are produced, attention is given to the fact that two versions of each video will be required (4 actually-stereo & split). Two versions of all graphics are produced and proofed. One thing to keep in mind when producing a Spanish language version of a video is the fact that it usually takes more time to say something in Spanish that it does in English. In other words, the Spanish translations will usually be longer than the English version. It takes a skilled translator to voice the videos in the same amount of time as the English version without sounding to rushed. Our guy does a pretty decent job of this.
The split track versions are used to produce the video in another language if necessary. They are our “backups” for additional versions down the road when the original editing elements have been purged from the computer. These are fairly involved projects with at least 5 different sections of video-usually about an hour of total program. It’s easier to use the split track tapes for additional versions than it is to reload all of the original elements used for the edit.
Also, if it’s for a government agency, don’t forget about Closed Captioning!

I had this problem some time ago and got around it by changing the Alpha Type of the clips. I don’t remember, offhand just what I changed from to what, but you might try changing the Alphas from whatever they are to another type and see if that helps after rendering.

October 31, 2008 at 10:39 pm in reply to: small field production solution

You could always use a small, analog switcher and feed the output of it into a suitable analog to digital converter box or a card and then record it on a computer. Just feed your mixed audio into the audio input and the switcher output into the video input, capture to s hard drive connected to the computer and you will be good to go. Of course, you will always have the chance that the computer could crash during your program, but it’s s fairly inexpensive solution. You probably have the equipment to do it right now.
