It’s difficult to tell from your screen grab, but the picture looks very under exposed to me. That will make for lots of noise, especially in the blacks where you will have few bits (less range) trying to reproduce the details. What did you use as a reference when setting the exposure. I notice that they guy is wearing a white shirt. Was the exposure set off of the peak white of the scene?

A 2/3-inch lens will do this if the lens is in a wide open setting-the iris is full open. Light rays will bounce all around between the rear of the lens and the MOS sensors. If you can stop the lens down a stop or two, the problem will usually go away or at lease minimize. Dial filter #1 into position to let the maximum amount of light into the camera. If you are using it outdoors on a sunny day, use filter 2 or 3 to avoid too small of an f-stop. The “sweet spot” for 2/3-inch lenses on a 370 seems to be around f5.6-f8. Performance will also depend on the speed (minimum f-stop) of that particular lens. Generally the faster the lens, the more light it can gather and the smaller the f-stop you can use in dim light.
Light your scene as best you can and stop the lens down to f2.8-f4 and it will look much better.

  • That’s exactly what a Droplet allows you to do. You make a preset in compressor and use that to create a Droplet that sits on your desk top. All you need to do to use is to just drag your file onto it, answer a question or two and it will take care of everything else. Quick, simple and idiot proof.

Anyone out there remember Ampex’s ACE touch screen linear editor? It could always be worse…

Or…nest the track containing the insert shots and apply the border filter to the nest.

  • Make sure that when you position a graphic it is on an even line vertically. Also make sure it is a whole number. Check the motion tab and try to keep it on an even line and also repo it slightly so none of the horizontal or vertical co-ordinates are fractions. It’s been like this in FCP since the beginning, but is most apparent on a DV timeline.

Try adding a very slight blur filter to the footage and adjust it until the jittering/moire is minimized. It can sometimes take the “edge” off of DSLR footage.

Do they have their own FTP site? If so, you can transfer it directly to them and by-pass the commercial transfer services. It will take a while, but there won’t be any file size limitations. You might need an FTP transfer application, but they are usually fairly inexpensive.
