Moire effect
HI,
Not a FCP question, but I’m shooting with a Canon XF-100, 50 mbps, 60i, 1980×1020.I get a moire effect with images like shiny surfaces or thin lines close together. Is this something I can correct by changing my camera settings? What causes this?
Any feedback would be helpful. Thanks.

What causes that is those thin lines and how the sensors react to them. This has been an issue for a long long time. how to avoid is to try to avoid objects with thin lines like that…the shiny objects. I know you can’t avoid them entirely, but do what you can.

You *might* get a little less moire if you de-tune the sensitivity of the sensor. Adding some horizontal blur in post can hide some of it as well. Changing the lens setting and thus, the lens to subject distance may give you a “sweet spot” where the effect is less obvious. I don’t know that a rotatable polarizer would help.

Try adding a very slight blur filter to the footage and adjust it until the jittering/moire is minimized. It can sometimes take the “edge” off of DSLR footage.
