This may be what was happening. I knew about this, but I never had to do it before, it always just worked. They have pcs, but all their edit stations are macs.

What I think may have happened is that most of the times the editors do the transferring with their macs (they go to the P2 store harrdrive then to the AVID). Which may be why I never had to switch modes and it always worked fine. For whatever reason someone must’ve used it on a pc, then when I tried to use it (one card came in successfully, then freak out) since it wasn’t in mac mode, it crapped out.

I normally send a Lacie designated to only holding P2 (content and last text) that we transfer during breaks or driving back from the shoots (gotta love power converters). But my producer forgot it, so we were stuck with the P2 store and cards.

so just to clarify…
you got to a harrdrive for archive purposes only, and it is not recommended to go from P2 card to P2 store harrdrive, then transfer to computer. Just seems like a waste of time since the P2 store is always erased and not saved for any back up reasons.

When I returned the drive to use their other one, it worked perfect at their facility.

They tried to blame mac and going direct to computer.
I think going to the harddrive first is an unnecessary step.
But I am a freelancer who gets paid by the hour, so if they want me to transfer twice, who am i to argue?

Any others take the step to transfer to harddrive first?

so if I understand your post correctly, It doesn’t matter that I I’m transferring P2 at 960×720, and outputting at 1280×720.

It sounds like my workflow is good, right?

Not sure whats happening to you, but try this as a workaround.

You said that you’ve exported “via compressor”.
Try doing a export-quicktime.
Then take that into compressor.

The only thing that I can think is that maybe the 2 offending sequences have some corruption. Since everything else is the same (settings/method/timing etc). Maybe try copy/paste These two into new sequences.

I thought the problem was the combination of upgrading quicktime & FCP.

So your on QT 7.3 and FCP 6.02, with no P2 troubles?

I almost posted this EXACT question.

My situation is this…

I’m working with 3 clients, 1 with P2 footage, the third gave me sequences that give me an error “software not new enough”. So I assume its originated from an updated system (they do not use P2 footage).

I have read many horror stories (Shane Ross) about the hassle trying to get P2 functionality back after the upgrade.

Apple is requiring I upgrade to QT 7.3, then ProApps, then FCP 6.02 (among others for other apps if needed).

Should I stay away from this upgrade still?

My biggest client is the one with P2 footage and I can’t jeopardize that.
Any success stories with upgrading, then using P2 footage?

I agree that Walter has cited a “perfect world” situation, and he mentioned the key words …”Yes, especially if you are earning money off these systems”.

It all comes down to your risk tolerance. I assume that Walter has been bagged before, so he chooses to be safe, a smart move if you have more than one computer.

I have worked on many different systems in many different locations, and I can’t think of one that did NOTHING else but edit. At the very least there is web surfing, photoshoping etc.

So don’t let this scare you too much, but Walter is a wise man, and if you can keep an edit only system, by all means, do it. It may save you A LOT of headaches if anything ever causes conflicts.

I say this all as I’m importing DVCPro HD 720p60 footage fro P2 cards as I check email and post on the cow.

Shake has scripting capabilities, but maybe not what you’ve suggested.
It may be worth looking into.

I also have had very good luck with Lacie, so far only used single drives, but I’ve used them for several years with relatively few problems. I did have one go south on me, but they replaced it with no hassles.
I’m well aware of the problems that others have had with them, but I like em.
