In addition to what Joe said, a very important part of light effects is remembering to have them light the rest of the scene—meaning casting shadows and reflecting off of and brightening objects near the light effect.

    > I hope Adobe comes up with a more intuitive way to use settings across multiple systems!

If you want to share settings between multiple computers using the same version of the application, there is an easy way:

    > What is the proper way to have the adjustment layer effect only select layers instead of everything below it?

That’s not possible. That’s not how adjustment layers work. An adjustment layer applies to the composite of the layers beneath it.

If you want to apply an effect to a specified set of layers, you have many options. Here are three:

    – Precompose the layers and apply the effect to the precomposition layer.
    – Precompose the layers and add an adjustment layer within the nested composition.
    – Apply the effect to each of the layers individually.

August 4, 2013 at 12:01 am in reply to: PrPro to Resolve for final render- optimal codec?

I strongly recommend against the Apple Intermediate Codec, which is a lossy 4:2:0 codec that is similar to the old and rather crummy HDV codec.

Animation is lossless, so it has for a long time been considered a good choice for intermediate files, but the PNG codec in a QuickTime container tends to give files about half the size while still being lossless.

Another good choice is ProRes 4444, which is slightly lossy, but not to a degree that matters for most workflows.
