Sounds like they have a “Telestream” box. We have one at our facility that we use to send spots at times, and it is MPEG based. A few things:

I’m not really sure that you will be able to get the MPEG into a format that will be usable by them on that piece of equipment. They should at least tell you what file extension they are looking for… there are several for MPEGs. I’m afraid that it may be some sort of wierd proprietary format, although I have been able to open MPEGs that it creates on my Mac, I’m not sure that it will go the other way.

I had remembered that Compressor 2 had that option of adding MP2 audio or something like that, and I tried it and ended up with a .mts file like you guys were talking about. I was able to open that file with VLC. You can download it for free at this address:

    https://www.videolan.org/vlc/

But you actually have to open VLC, then go to File>Open and select the .mts file. So it does open, and the quality seemed fine for me, but I have a sinking feeling that this file will be of litttle use to the station you are trying to get a spot to.

My advice would be to try to get them to accept a miniDV dub. I’m assuming that is what you are using (and why you aren’t providing them with a beta dub), but you could also find a local facility that could dub from miniDV to beta and that may be an option also. I doubt that they can ONLY recieve spots via FTP, and if they want to run the spot (and believe me they do) they should work with you on a dub format.

    Good luck.

  • [Andy Mees] “during the development of FCP5 Apple would obviously have already been planning their PCIe move, and have taken the necessary measures”

VERY funny that you should say that. Currently they have NO solution for connecting their new Quad G5 to their XRaid (which I have) because they do not have a PCIe fibre card that is actually shipping. Yes I know it says it is shipping on the Apple site, but I have been assured that it in fact is not shipping. I’d say their planning of the PCIe move did NOT take the necessary measures. Like storage. That’s kindof a biggie.

Just $.02 from someone stuck on an older G5 for the time being.

[Ben Insler] “To my knowledge, you’d need an expensive piece of conversion hardware to convert from 1080i HDV to DV on the fly.”

Really? We just used one of those cameras last month and it seems like I remember a built-in down-convert through FireWire even. The reason I know this is because I had a hard time capturing HDV at first. Turns out the camera was still in “DV Downconvert” mode.

So, you should be able to digitize the footage in DV, but as Matte said, don’t expect the footage from the 2 cameras to match well. Also, if you do that be sure to shoot anamorphic 16:9 on the GL-1. That might help a little.

    Good luck!

Last I heard (which was last week) from my reseller, there is NO fibre card out there that will allow you to connect your Quad G5 with an XRaid. Just throwing that out there. The apple site shows a PCIe fibre card and says “Ships within 2 weeks” but again last I heard that was some total BS, and you will get a regret letter if you order it.

For this reason we are staying with out Dual 2.0 because we simply must have somewhere to store the video. I can’t believe that this is still a problem, but apparently it is.

I am now waiting on the Macintel box to come out. We figure everything will change then anyways, and any Quad we bought now would just be out of date next summer.

I believe you will always have to render an alpha channel. It should preview in real-time, depending on your system specs.

.tiff and .tga are good options.

    Just use “Edit to Tape”.

It will give you bars, tone, even a slate. You enter the start timecode, and it is frame-accurate.

But really, do yourself a favor and read at least part of the manual. =)

November 23, 2005 at 8:43 pm in reply to: This is probably an easy question

You probably need to open “Sequence Settings” (right click your sequence in the browser) and check the “Anamorphic 16:9” box.

    That should do it.

  • Another easy way to do this (rather than putting each clip into the canvas) would be to select all the clips in your timeline, right-click and select “Remove Attributes”. Then select “Basic Motion” and “Distort” to reset all the clips at once.

Post back if this was your problem.

  • One thing you could try would be to start a new sequence (Uncompressed 10-bit as your “Easy Setup”) and then copy paste your entire sequence from the old into the new sequence. See if that has any effect.

Awesome! Thanks Walter! I’ll pass that along to my boss, although I may take your advice and just wait for the Intel chip… Wonder if they’ll offer Quad Intel versions…
