  • mpeg2 with audio????

I need to send a couple of 2 minute spots to a very small local TV channel.

What I have been told is that they need an mpeg2 file with audio which is then ftp’d to some magic box that handles the broadcast.

Is there such a thing as an mpeg2 file that contains both audio and video?

    Peter,

Sure, it’s called a muxed mpeg. I know Cleaner can make them and I’m not sure but I think Compressor 2 can also.

    Have a wonderful day.

I just checked, Compressor 2 has this setting also.

Thanks Chris – I use compressor 1.2 so didn’t see the option in compressor2. However when I switch to compressor 2 and check the audio option in extras I get a .mts output file which QT can’t open.

I dug out cleaner and did get an .mpg output file which QT could open but the pic contained a lot of artifacts and the audio sounded half speed.

Has anyone successfully created a muxed mpeg2/1 file using compressor?

    Hmmm,

Yeah I tried making one in Compressor, and could not open it either, but it may be that the station’s server can. Why don’t you send them something to test?

Which version of Cleaner do you have? I’ve made a bunch of these with Cleaner 5 and they always come out fine. I do them for a movie chain.

    Have a wonderful day.

no – the lady is not really confident using the system she needs to check everything in WMP before uploading it. I tried cleaner again and tweaking the settings the video looks ok – but the audio sounds as if its running at 10% speed or something – very slurred can’t make out a single work – but as far as I can tell the audio is running at the correct speed – just very distorted. Any ideas? Any settings I might have missed?

also cleaner takes 10x longer than compressor –

strange that QT can’t open the output from compressor2 – although compressor2 is way the worst upgrade I have ever come across

    Peter,

Gimme an hour or so, I’ll open Cleaner and see what’s what and I’ll report back to you.

    Have a wonderful day.

    Hey Peter,

Well shoot, guess I haven’t done one of these since changing to Tiger, QT 7 can’t open these anymore. So I may have made a perfectly good file but I can’t check it. Sorry.

    Have a wonderful day.

Sounds like they have a “Telestream” box. We have one at our facility that we use to send spots at times, and it is MPEG based. A few things:

I’m not really sure that you will be able to get the MPEG into a format that will be usable by them on that piece of equipment. They should at least tell you what file extension they are looking for… there are several for MPEGs. I’m afraid that it may be some sort of wierd proprietary format, although I have been able to open MPEGs that it creates on my Mac, I’m not sure that it will go the other way.

I had remembered that Compressor 2 had that option of adding MP2 audio or something like that, and I tried it and ended up with a .mts file like you guys were talking about. I was able to open that file with VLC. You can download it for free at this address:

    https://www.videolan.org/vlc/

But you actually have to open VLC, then go to File>Open and select the .mts file. So it does open, and the quality seemed fine for me, but I have a sinking feeling that this file will be of litttle use to the station you are trying to get a spot to.

My advice would be to try to get them to accept a miniDV dub. I’m assuming that is what you are using (and why you aren’t providing them with a beta dub), but you could also find a local facility that could dub from miniDV to beta and that may be an option also. I doubt that they can ONLY recieve spots via FTP, and if they want to run the spot (and believe me they do) they should work with you on a dub format.

    Good luck.
