You can throw your DV clips into a 10-bit Uncompressed timeline if you need to add graphics or do color correction, etc. The graphics look much better in an uncompressed timeline than a DV timeline, and if you are going out to DVD you should get much better results! Note you will have to render the DV clip of course because it is not uncompressed, but this will render your DV clip + your graphics all in 10-bit.
There is some discussion over whether it is better to “up-rez” at the point of capture to bring the footage itself in as uncompressed, but I personally don’t see any advantage to this in most cases.

Umm… Why waste your time trying to re-create this “bug” thing over and over, when what you are doing is somewhat incorrect to begin with. As someone has told you before, at this point you should delete the transition, replace your clip, then add the transition back. Done. Let the people at Apple go on bug hunts and you just go on editing. Lesson learned: I must delete a transition before replacing a clip on the timeline. Kinda sux, but not really. Did edit* really not have any situations where you had to incorporate a workaround?
[Bob Flood] “I think one of the problems with FCP is that its on a mac, and therefore subject to the oddities inherent in the apple os, hence the need to trash prefs etc”
Wow. You would actually prefer the Windows OS environment? Perhaps you should check out Premiere. It has come a long way from what I hear, and now has similar functionality to FCP. At least it would be on your preferred OS. But I bet if you look really hard you could find a “bug” with that program too. Sounds like edit* is the only “real editor” out there for you based on this:
[Bob Flood] “some of these fcp folks have never used edit* and do not not what a real editor works like”
Why did you leave edit*?

Does anyone else wish there was a better title solution with FCP? I actually miss the Title Tool from Avid simply because you can see the video underneath the graphic that you are creating. I know that you can export a still or ref movie and pull that into LiveType, but it’s an extra step that is a bit annoying. Sometimes the Title 3D graphics seem a bit soft to me as well, so I’ve been using LiveType a bit more lately. Or Photoshop.

I’d trash your FCP preferences first before the QuickTime re-install. Do you get the “Preview Unavailable” over color bars in your capture window?

I believe that you actually have to change your “Easy Setup” to HDV. Under “Final Cut Pro” (far left top or your screen next to the blue apple) choose “Easy Setup” and then select HDV 1080i (or whatever setup you need).
You will notice a slightly different looking capture window than the normal one, and you should get video. If you have already done this and still can’t get video be sure that your particular camcorder is in the right “mode”. We use the Sony Z1 here and I know it has a DV downconvert option that might throw this off…

Does nobody else have this problem, or is there just no solution?

I would suggest that you download the free demo of Squeeze and give it a try. You might want to look at Bitvice as well. You can download a free demo at their website as well.

At the moment, any given app can only use 2 Gig of RAM at a time. So with 8 Gig, you could have 4 different apps all maxing out the RAM at the same time, but I don’t think it will help your render times. A faster Mac will though! =)

[reel2reel] “ry shift-f to reveal the Master clip”
Hey, that worked! Shift-F in the Viewer highlights the source clip in the bin.
Nice!

When I’ve had to pull material from DVD, sometimes I have better luck actually capturing from the DVD. I usually have the footage dubbed to Beta SP and then bring it in by capturing it from the tape. Don’t know if this will help, but it’s worth a try.
Good luck and post back if you figure something out.
