First, nice work in recapping your issue!
Boy, I’m hard pressed to say what you’re seeing is not “normal” for a camera with 1/3″ chips. Do you get this noise in the “standard” video mode of 30i? Remember, DV is 5-1 compression, and this artifacting sort of looks like what this might be.
The one thing I find of interest is that you state you’re running your iris wide open (2.8)outside. I might try this same scenario, only knocking it down a few stops to see if that helps.
In the QT movie, I downloaded it and doubled it’s size when looking at it and there is some noise.
What version of FCP are you using? Older versions have (IMHO) inferior codecs.
Does this footage look like this coming directly out of the camera into a monitor, or do you only see it AFTER it’s been ingested into your editor? This would be interesting to know.

Check this out:

The picture shows the mic holder that should have come with you DVX. If not, you should be able to order one.
As far as mics, certainly the old standby Sony ECM series are good if your looking for a hardwired mic. I suspect others have favorites.
Anyway, check out:

March 26, 2007 at 4:07 pm in reply to: i’ve had my DVX-100 for almost three years…cleaning???I subscribe to the If-it-aint-broke-don’t-fix-it philosphy. One way to insure it don’t break in the first place is to follow the manual for recommended service.
If you’re not experiencing any issues, using the tape cleaner per instructions is a good thing. If something is happening that’s causing you to question the unit, then perhaps service by qualified techs will pay for itself when you don’t have to cancel an important gig because your gear doesn’t work.
Hope this helps,

Are your charging problems ONLY in the country where you are at? Did these battery charge OK before you left your home?
I’m leaning towards the charger because of the acknowledged current issues.
Sorry

Perhaps the problem is with your charger?
What Charger are you using? What kind of batteries?
More info would be helpful.

Have you tried looking at the output on different spicket (S-Video or Firewire)?
If you’ve tried tape-cleaning the head and still no luck, but it records OK, then perhaps I’m stating the obvious, but send it in for servicing.
The DV transporttape path is so small/delicate, you may do more harm than good in trying to clean the heads manually.

In addition to what Noah has said, yes, if you’re using the P2 Cards (in an HVX200, not the DVX100), it can be a “pain”, but you should really educate yourself on the P2 support tools that are available including a Hard Disk unit that transfers content from the P2 cards to it’s hard drive, and a Firestore unit that hooks directly to the HVX with its own 80gb Hard Drive.
Additionally, the P2 cards do average only about a gig per minute in the HD setting, but they’ll give you about 15 minutes in the standard def mode.
Do you homework…there’s a BUNCH to learn about P2.
Good luck,

I use this and have been very satisfied!
I believe a significant difference in some of the Panasonic tapes is the actual thickness.
I agree with what’s been said about investing in good tape!

February 13, 2007 at 3:58 pm in reply to: Quick help and opinions on dvx 100a vs. dvx 100b….which to buy?I don’t believe there is any compatibility issue with Avid for either of these units, though many recommend using a different DV deck to capture material. DV capture using firewire is OK, though responsiveness is better with a deck than the camera.
If you’re using an Avid Recommened Setup, you should be fine.
