    [Nick L.] “Wow – 2″ VTRs! The largest I can claim is 1″ – I can’t say that I miss threading tapes.”

Well, the Sony BVH-3100 with auto threading was a real hoot. Imagine, a VTR that acted like a vacuum cleaner. Who’da thunk it?

    Cheers,

June 13, 2005 at 7:38 pm in reply to: Avid Xpress Pro vs. Final Cut Pro vs. Media 100i

[Floh] “Nicole] “Hi. I’m currently using Media 100i, but have the opportunity to move to one of these other platforms. Any advice?”

I think there is no “perfect” system, but it pretty much depends on your needs. Media 100 HD and sw are very powerful systems, and they are perfectly for Media 100 i users, since they use the same UI with powerful new features. FCP is harder to learn, and AVID will need a lot of attention before you will get some good results.”

I concur…Having been on Media 100 for 6 years, and switching cold-turkey to Avid Media Composer Adrenaline, it was a shock to my intuative systems. Avid is VERY attention-hogging, and if you’ve used M100 for awhile, you be dissappointed with UI. I found FCP to be cumbersome as well, though I’ll admit, I haven’t used its newer versions.

I wouldn’t give up my MCA, as I think it offers me lots in terms of development for the future, but I will say, I ended up buying my “old” M100 system intact, and now it occupies what I hope will be my future profit-making edit suite in my basement 😉

    Good luck,

[Nick L.] “Bottom line, the 100A shoots great video, in my opinion. I think the digitizing rate is a separate issue, whether you’re using the Media 100, another NLE, or another camera.”

Nick, thanks. And I do hope it shoots “great” video. Having done this for 20 years, cutting my technical teeth by setting up 2″ RCA Quad VTR’s, I’ve seen a lot and hope the 100A, for the price, gives me an image I can work with. I’ve got a unit coming for demo next week, so we’ll see what happens.

    Thanks again for your time….

[Noah Kadner] “It would look outstanding for broadcasting assuming of course good lighting, production design etc.

Not sure if you are understanding the 30p vs. 24p concept though. 24p is the more film looking format- it closely emulates film which runs at 24 frames per second- hence 24p.

Thanks for your Reply Mr. Kadner. I appreciate it. I asked the questions because in other another forum, a respondent was dissatisfied with the 24p look. and suggested 30p, as he felt 24p was too “strobie”

I’ve got the camera coming for a demo next week and will surely play until my curiousity is satisfied.

Having done this for 20 years, and lived through Panasonic’s flirtation with MII, I’m just trying to put my mind at ease with the purchase (contrary to a promise I made to myself in the early 90’s) of another Panasonic product.

[Nick L.] “I have the DVX100A and I am very happy with it. I shoot a lot of interview in 24p mode but haven’t done many high action shots with it. I usually digitiize into the Media100 at 200 kb and haven’t had any problems. There is a forum on this site specifically for the 100A – you can probably get more useful info there.”

Nick, at 200 kb, this would be about 2 to 1 compression, correct? I’ve got an older Media 100 (ver 6) running with a couple of SCSI arrays for a total of about 32 gigs of storage space. My footage will be all tripod and not alot of zooms or pans. What am I looking at (roughly) for total minutes available for storage with these 32 Gigs? 35 minutes? 40? 50?

    Thanks for your consideration,

    Tim

May 9, 2005 at 8:05 pm in reply to: Importing Clips from AE

This might be a long-shot, but have you activated the anti-aliasing function on your effect? I don’t have AE open right now, but on the timeline, for each layer, there’s a slash that if it looks jagged, means the anti-aliasing is off. Click on the slash until it appears smooth, then make your movie and import into Media 100. Maybe this will help, though it will slow AE down a bit.

    Good Luck,

    Tim
