If you are buying new, and are in the United States, you MUST be sure you’re buying from an “Authorized Panasonic Dealer” of the DVX-100a
You can find a list at:
Failure to do so may void any warranty you get with the unit you end up with, as the product you get may NOT have been intended for sale in the US. If the price you’re looking at is below $3,300, I’d be very careful.
Good Luck,

Buy new……
You’ll get $300 cash back anyways if you buy within your current deadline.
Good luck,

Noah,
I probably should’ve asked this before placing my order, but what might you consider a “good” and “fair” price for the the DVX100AMB (the package they are selling w/the rebate and accessories)from a FULL-service, authorized Panasonic dealer?
Thanks,
Tim

In short, the answer to your question about “interchangeable” lens’ is no, the 100a lens is what it is. You were given some good advice on reading the article about the 3 DV camera Shootout. I would read and understand that.
Additionally, ss someone who has produced a great many hunting/fishing programs over the years, I would hope you’d take the effort to understand and master the concepts of video/program production before (if) you intend to distribute. Nothing harms the conservation movement more than the public presentation of REALLY bad hunting/fishing videos.
Good Luck,

[gingles] “No, it’s not that I don’t think. The hum/buzz registers about four to five bars on the audio monitor. And the XLR inputs are different for each of the lav mics so it’s not that either. Very vexing and something that I need to fix ASAP.”
OK, what were trying to do is ID the common denominator between your two wireless systems. Are you using the same mic cable for both systems? Are they different wireless systems, or just hardwired lav mics? How are the XLR inputs “different”? A hum/buzz could be indicative of a poor ground wire connection w/in your mic cable, or w/in the cable between the micropohone and the transmitter.
I’m not sure the issue is with your camera, I mean, what does it care if the signal is from a wireless or a shotgun (which you said works fine).
Good Luck, and let us know if you fix this and how.

[Lawrence Marshall] ”
What I am most curious about is why you are limiting yourself to 150kb on the Media 100? 150kb is 4:1 compression. With Version 6, you can take it up to 300kb (2:1) compression. Is it drive space? Drives aren’t fast enough? With inexpensive Firewire drives out there, neither reason would seem to apply…”Lawrence, Drive space is the prime consideration. Given this could be a 30-60 minute show, I’ve only got 32 gigs of drive space available on the system. At this point, I’m now leaning towards compressing at 200 kbs. Admittedly, I’m not discerning much difference between 150 and 200, but I’m thinking I’ll give the benefit of any doubt to the 200 kbs setting. I just don’ think I’ll have
enough space at 300 kbs. Finally, and I would be interested in your thoughts, I’m not sure my legacy system (M100 v.6 running on a 200 mhz Mac Power PC 9600) will handle a firewire device. I was told the firewire needs to be part of the M100 card.
What do you think?

I might start w/the cable. Did you use the same XLR cable for all three audio sources?
Do you need to adjust line/mic level when switching from the shotgun to the wireless?

[David Jones] “Which board are you using in the Media 100,
The 601 @ 640 x 480, or the P6000 @ 720 x 486?”David, I believe I’ve got the 601 board 640 x 480.

[Ed] “Michael,
You’re still recommending SDI after the posts to you about it in the AJA IO forum? 🙂Tim,
Check out the Adam Wilt and Graeme Nattress links about DV and SDI here:

Ed”Given budget and equipment restraints w/regards to my (shoestring)project, my intended content path looks like it will be aquisition on the DVX100A..playback for digitizing on a Sony DSR-1500a component video into Media 100 v6 at (at least!) 150 kb.
When done complete, it’ll be mastered component out onto Beta SP.
Somebody ruin my day and tell me this AIN’T gonna work very well, cause I don’t know what I don’t know.
Thanks (I think)

[David Jones] “Footage from an AG-DVX100a looks pretty good.
But IMHO, the biggest problem you will face with a regional broadcast on PBS
will be the recompression of 5:1 DV material to the Media 100 @ 150kb.
Many a show has been rejected by PBS because of improper blanking width
and compression artifacting from older media 100 systems running @ 150kb.Good Luck with your shoot!”
David, thanks for your note. I’ve had Media 100 (at 150 KB) material reviewed by the technical staff at
one PBS station and they were satisfied. Admittedly, this was acquired on Beta SP and not DV, so I will factor that into my production process. At this point, it looks as though I’ll be bringing this into my “legacy” system from the component out of a DV deck. I’ve got no firewire capability with this system. Keeping my fingers crossed.
Thanks again,
Tim
