Just an update. As suggested in the last post, I went through very carefully and I think I have worked out a system to keep the footage as is and still have everything work. thanks for the help!

i didnt mean to say that the programs i am using CANT do anamorphic. its just that some of my footage is anamorphic, and some is not, so I want to make them as uniform as possible. plus i find that using funky pixel aspects it can be a bit tricky to keep everything straight. if i can make everything square pixels, it just seems like it would be much easier.

i was also wondering how to do this and just figured it out. (why would you say you figured it out without explaining. very silly) Anyway, here is the way I found. After creating a text layer, expand the layer to reveal the Text options in the Comp view. There is a property called “Source Text.” Key this, move down the timeline, change the font in the character panel, and you will notice a new key. Eureka! A note: this is only a step keyframe and cannot be smoothed. I imagine you could fake this with some mesh warping, but that would take time if you have a lot of changes you want to key.

December 5, 2007 at 6:52 pm in reply to: Tiffs from Maya stuttering

well actually I have tried to use quicktime pro to convert the image sequence to an .mov but the stuttering still exists.
I have 2 theories. I have heard some people complain about recent quicktime updates giving them problems. So thats the first theory. The other is that there was some sort of issue coming out of maya. This would be a huge problem because I actually dont have the time to rerender all of the animation. So I am exploring using frame blending to mask the issue. Any tips?

    Thanks in advance!

ok. sorry. i am getting it to work ok now. it doesnt look great though. has anyone else had problems with this where the edges of objects look bad when using the DOF effect on RLA files?

ok. i have gotten AE to recognize the depth map and DOF is working, kind of. It seems that it will only blur the foreground and I cannot get it to blur the bkg instead, which is what i need.

    Suggestions?

  • thanks for the suggestions. I will certainly try this but I think there is an easier way to do it… maybe.

    thanks again

[Dan Ebberts] “Recipe for shadow-catching invisible layer:

    Use a white solid.
    Set mode to Multiply.
    Accepts Shadows = on.
    Accepts Lights = off.

    Dan”

So far this works great. Thanks so much!

[Dave LaRonde] “Whoa, think about it: if you set a layer to cast shadows only, you’ll only see a shadow on the layer accepting the shadow. Isn’t that what you’re after?

I think everyone is misunderstanding me. Basically I want a layer that acts as a “floor”, and that layer is totally invisible except that it shows shadows that are cast from other objects. I just want to see shadows without having to worry about the edges of the floor etc. If this does not make sense i can try to explain further. Thanks again….

ah the eternal issue. what you can do is go to the secret menu, hold shift (make sure you do this first), then, while holding shift, go to your preferences. There will now be a category called Secret at the bottom of the list. Click on disable cache. and the next part takes a bit of experiment and is very project specific. If you find you are crashing after a certain number of frames, say 100, you should try something a little lower than that, like 90. This will dump the memory of the frames up to 90 and start over. If it keeps crashing, lower this number till it works. If the problem continues then im not sure what to do. I hope I got all that right and that it works for you. good luck
